Flat Stanley and his Suspenders

Nana was sitting out on the back porch with an iced tea in her hand this afternoon.  It was a hot day.  She was pondering Flat Stanley and all they’ve done since he was sent here by her granddaughter Alexa.

When Flat Stanley first moved to the farm with Nana and Papa in Massachusetts, he was slim and trim and had no idea what a chicken ate, or how to care for them.  He was a wide eyed boy full of wonder, with that beautiful smile.  He learned quickly.

He never lost this wide eyed sense of wonder.  He loves everyone and appreciates all of the kindness Nana and Papa give him.  He likes to return the favor by helping out on the farm in any way he can.

When Nana saw how well Flat Stanley did on the farm, to show her appreciation; she awarded him with a brand new pair of red suspenders.  He loved his red suspenders, and he loves helping Nana, still.

Yesterday it was gardening, today it was feeding the chickens and helping her gather and cook the eggs for Papa.  He made sure the chickens had plenty of water.  Today it was over 90 degrees and very humid.  Chickens can handle the heat, but they do need extra water; just like humans.

Nana likes to repay kindness and help around the house and farm, in any way she can.  With Flat Stanley, it was easy.  He loves her chicken fried steak, macaroni and cheese and dill potatoes with sour cream.

With the added calories in his diet, Flat Stanley soon found he didn’t need the suspenders to keep his pants up.  With all the work he was doing to help Nana and Papa, he wasn’t getting fat, but he was filling out and growing.

So the red suspenders ended up in his drawer upstairs in the bureau.  Nana calls it a bureau, but Flat Stanley knows that’s just a fancy word for “dresser.”  He still calls it a dresser, and has his red suspenders rolled up in a nice round circle in the corner of  his top drawer.  It’s a daily reminder of when he was awarded the label of “farmer,” a label he wears proudly.

Just looking at those suspenders makes him smile.  I hope this finds you smiling too!  If so, please subscribe so that Nana can send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley adventure is posted.

Flat Stanley The Gardener

Nana and Papa had a garden party.  Flat Stanley was excited about everyone coming over to help Nana and Papa plant their garden this year.

“This is going to be a fun day!” Flat Stanley said with great excitement in his voice.

“Yes it is!” Nana smiled as they browsed the rows and rows of plants in the nursery.  She had to decide what vegetables she wanted in the garden.  It was hard to choose.  Who knew they had so many different varieties of tomatoes.  Nana finally settled on the little cherry tomatoes, the Better Boy tomatoes and Roma’s for the tomato sauce she likes to can in the fall.

Flat Stanley chose the banana peppers.  When Nana told him that they don’t grow bananas, he put them back.  But Nana likes banana peppers, so she put them back in the basket and added bell peppers, spinach, different kinds of lettuce and all kinds of herbs.  Nana’s favorite herb is basil.  What’s your favorite thing to grow in the garden?

Friends came over and the party got started!

Flat Stanley enjoyed playing in the pool with the kids.

But he also liked getting his hands dirty and planting the vegetables.

These are the “better boy” tomatoes.

“You can plant me right here,” Flat Stanley said, “cause I’m the BEST Boy!”

“You are the best boy in town sonny!” Nana told him with a smile.

Turning the soil was fun.  Flat Stanley loved getting his hands all dirty!

“Here you go Nana!  Here’s your favorite Basil.” Flat Stanley shouted as she left her pots boiling with corn and potatoes on the stove, to come out to see how the garden was coming along.

After all that hard work it was time to feast!

Nana had a dozen lobsters for everyone and fried chicken for any crazy soul that doesn’t like lobster.  She boiled corn on the cob and potatoes.  Flat Stanley’s favorite part of the meal was the fruit bowl!  It had fresh strawberries, blueberries and grapes.  His mouth looked like a rainbow of colors when he smiled.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Enjoy a beautiful day!

Flat Stanley I am I am

Flat Stanley woke up in a pretty good mood, but his mood got way better when Nana pulled a BIG Mango out of the fruit bowl.  Flat Stanley’s eyes lit up and his mouth began to water as Nana cut into the juicy fruit and he could smell the sweet mango scent in the air.

When Nana handed Flat Stanley an entire plate of sweet juicy mango, his smile lit up wide and bright!  He devoured the sweet juicy fruit.

Nana shared hers with Papa and everyone was smiling with this tropical taste on their tongues.

This made Flat Stanley start the “Mango Tango Dance!”  This is where your feet fly high and your hands clap under your knees.  He wobbled his head from side to side and then broke into the slide.  Side to side swooop, side to side swooop.  Flat Stanley is a good dancer.

He’s a good singer too!  After Papa finished the dishes he spotted Flat Stanley in the corner jamming on his guitar.  Papa pulled up a chair to listen.

“I’m just a boy, I am, I am, I’m Flat Stanley and I love to jam.”

“You can do the Mango Tango if you please, do the side swoop and drop to your knees!  We do the Mango, TANGOOooooo; we do the Mango, TANGOOOoooo.”

Nana and Papa were both enjoying Flat Stanley’s silliness and it brought a huge smile to their faces.  I hope Flat Stanley brought a smile to your face too.  Smiles are definitely contagious and we all need more smiling in today’s world.

Flat Stanley and the BIG ol’ Egg

Flat Stanley woke up with one thing on his mind today.  That big ol’ egg was waiting to be cracked and he wanted to surprise Nana and Papa with breakfast!

Remember that big ol’ egg that Flat Stanley collected from the coop yesterday?

Flat Stanley carefully retrieved the egg from the refrigerator and got a little dish to crack it into.  He wanted to make breakfast!

He was surprised to see not one, but two yolks fall from the cracked shell of that huge egg.

When Flat Stanley heard Nana coming down the stairs he showed her the one shell and the two yolks.

“Look Nana!  Twin yolks!  That big ol’ ostrich looking egg had two yolks in it!”

“Good, because I’m double hungry this morning,” Nana said with a smile.

Nana helped Flat Stanley turn the stove on and stand with him for safety.  He gingerly dropped the eggs in the pan, and then she smiled when he ever so carefully flipped them without breaking the yolk.  That’s very hard to do!

Nana looked at the fruit basket and noticed a big orange that was ripe and ready to eat.  She sliced that juicy orange as Flat Stanley buttered the bread.  The butter was a bit hard, so he just had to leave it to sit and melt on the warm toast.

Papa was one happy man when he came downstairs.  A nice breakfast was waiting for him.  His smile was huge when he heard about that big plate of two eggs coming from one eggshell!  I hope your smile is big right now too.  Please subscribe so that Nana can send you a note when a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.  Everyone needs a free smile a day!  Share the smiles.

Flat Stanley Enjoys Bubbles and Puddles

Flat Stanley wasn’t having a very good couple of days.  He wasn’t feeling very well and spent most of his day resting.

After dinner tonight, Flat Stanley began feeling much better.  A few friends came over and Nana came out with BUBBLES!  Flat Stanley was so excited about meeting a new friend.  Her name is Eris and she was pretty taken by Flat Stanley too.

All kids LOVE bubbles and Flat Stanley and Eris are no exception!  Nana proved she was a kid by showing how much she loved popping the bubbles out of the air too.

“Pop, Pop, Pop,” she said as she finger poked them in mid air.

Flat Stanley enjoyed doing the blowing part.  He loves watching the bubbles fly from his wand like magic.

Eris liked chasing the bubbles that Flat Stanley blew and she also said “Pop, Pop, POP,” as she plucked them out of the air with her finger.

Then Flat Stanley and Eris found the big puddle.

You know they wanted to, you know they had to; you know they DID!

…and then he went swimming.

Eris had her rain boots on, so she was able to save Flat Stanley from his swimming hole.  Everyone was so happy to see Flat Stanley get up and laugh.  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe if you’d like Nana to send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley adventure is posted.  Who doesn’t like a smile delivered daily?

Flat Stanley Enjoys Shopping with Great Grandma!

When Nana told Flat Stanley she was going to lunch with Grandma Great, Flat Stanley immediately jumped up and began putting his shoes on.

“I want to go too,” he said.

“Well then tie those laces up tight and let’s get!” Nana replied.

Nana and Papa were up in front.  Flat Stanley sat next to Auntie Elaine in the backseat and when Grandma Great got in, he scooted to the middle to make room.

The restaurant was really good!  Flat Stanley loved his macaroni and cheese.  I’m sure it’s as good as the one that Auntie Terri made last week, but Briana forgot to bring some over for Nana to try.  She’s been teasing her all week about it.  Nana likes macaroni and cheese as much as Flat Stanley does!

Auntie Elaine let Flat Stanley try a bite of her steak.  It was delicious!

After a wonderful lunch, it was time for some shopping!

In front of the grocery store there were a lot of beautiful flowers for sale.  Flat Stanley climbed up into the hanging basket and when Nana walked by with Grandma Great he was swinging and singing.

“Magical flowers await you here, magical flowers will greet you there.  Come  buy one, come buy all, magical flowers await you all.”

Nana shook her head and helped Flat Stanley down out of the hanging basket of flowers.

When they got in the store Flat Stanley spotted  his little cart and zoomed up next to Grandma Great.

“Not so fast there Flat Stanley,” Grandma Great said, “I may be older, but I’ll still outshop you!”

Flat Stanley liked moving ahead and helping her shop as they went through the store.  His eyes could see the sodium content on the labels.  She watches how much salt she eats, that’s why she’s so healthy.

When Flat Stanley saw the Cheerios he grabbed one for his own cart!  You know how Flat Stanley loves the crunchy munch of Cheerios!

…and the crunchy munch of pickles are good too.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, and sometimes you don’t.  Flat Stanley likes the crunchy nutty peanut butter, but Papa likes the creamy smooth one.  Which one do you like?

Flat Stanley couldn’t contain himself when he saw the red and blue stars on the cookies!  He jumped up and said “please, please please Nana.”

It was hard to resist his cute face, but Nana didn’t buy the cookies.  But, she told him he could get something from the gumball machine on his way out.

Flat Stanley had some choices to make then!  There were a lot of gumball machines.

Flat Stanley went for the stretchy Fling Shot toy and had a big smile as they left the store.  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe so Nana can send you a free smile every day!

Flat Stanley Celebrates Grandma T’s Birthday!

Flat Stanley had the best day, he got to go out to lunch with Papa’s mom, Grandma T; and share her 96th birthday with her!

As we made our way up the ramp inside the heavy door which Grandma T INSISTED on holding for everyone, we found ourselves in a beautiful Irish Restaurant.  The walls were covered in dark wood that made it really warm and inviting.

The signs on the walls were fun to read, and they made everyone at the table giggle as we walked by.  The walls were covered in signs and little plaques.  Our favorite was right over our own table.

“Money is the root of all evil, men need roots.”

“Yes we do!” Auntie Elaine said with a chuckle.  If you remember, Auntie Elaine is Papa’s sister.  She came up from Virginia to celebrate their mom’s birthday this week.

Flat Stanley climbed up into the seat and was ready to eat!  He was hungry.  Everyone was.

We ordered an app, not the kind of app on a cell phone, but an appetizer.  It’s a small snack that comes to the table before your meal.  Only this “app” was anything but small!  It was calamari, which is a fancy name for squid and Flat Stanley wasn’t sure if he’d like to try it.  But, it was delicious!  Flat Stanley is an adventurous eater.  He likes to try new things.  Do you?

Flat Stanley ordered the seafood pie.  It was baked seafood covered in mashed cauliflower and browned just a little to make it crispy on top.  Papa ordered the same thing as Flat Stanley!

When the waitress brought the food, she told Papa it was hot, but Papa must not have heard her because he burned the roof of his mouth on the HOT Potatoes.  Poor Papa.  The ice cubes from his water helped sooth his pain.  Flat Stanley was very careful to blow on his seafood pie.

Flat Stanley caught Papa stealing some baked schrod fish from Grandma T’s plate.  He looked a little guilty.

The best part of the meal came after everyone leaned back and said they were so very full they couldn’t eat another bite.  Have you ever felt like that?

Well, there we were, leaned back in our “full to the brim” mode, when the waitress came singing “Happy Birthday to you….Happy Birthday to youuuuu.. Happy Birthday dear Moooooom,” Happy Birthday to youuuuuuu…”

Flat Stanley helped Grandma T blow her candle out.

It was a sweet afternoon, but Flat Stanley knew that it was about to get way sweeter!

Everyone that was so full and couldn’t eat another bite just seconds before suddenly grabbed a spoon and completely devoured the frozen pie made with Bailey’s ice cream.

Grandma T then opened her cards and presents.

She was happy to receive a new necklace that has three circles.  One in silver, one in gold and one in bronze.  The circles on the necklace say Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma.

Flat Stanley decided that Grandma T needed a new name.  He started calling her “Grandma GREAT!”

When the presents were opened and the cards were read, Flat Stanley looked at the creamy melted goodness at the bottom of the dessert bowl.  You know he wanted to, you know he HAD to; You know he DID!

Flat Stanley enjoyed licking the bowl clean!  It was a day of fun and giggles.  I hope this finds you giggling too!  Please subscribe if you’d like Nana to send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley adventure is posted!

Flat Stanley Finds a Portal

Flat Stanley was out in the yard again today.  He loves springtime and all of the beautiful flowers.  More flowers were blooming all over the yard, it was so pretty.  He walked up the long driveway, kicking up gravel as he stepped.

He cut across the front lawn toward the rock wall by the street that is lined with gigantic maple trees.

The tallest maple tree looked like it would be fun to climb.  Flat Stanley began placing his feet in the deep crevices of the bark and made his way up higher and higher.

When he got up as high as the telephone poles, he had reached large holes in the tree.

Flat Stanley looked inside thinking that maybe there would be a bird’s nest in there, but when he got really close, there was a swooshing sound and a vibration that pulled him in.  He felt a spinning sensation and closed his eyes for a second.

When he opened them again, he was in a magical land of gnomes.  He felt like a giant as he circled around a mushroom and watched the friendly gnomes sing and dance in the distance.

Flat Stanley walked up to them with his usual big smile on his face.  His feet started moving to the beat and the gnomes welcomed him into their circle.  Flat Stanley picked up on the chorus and joined in.

“We dance, we dance, circling around we dance.  Come fly over the rainbow of love as we dance, we dance, circling around we dance.”

Flat Stanley let his legs fly high and clapped under his knees just like the gnomes.  Their laughs were really high and cute.  Flat Stanley was having fun.

At the end of the song, a rainbow arched down and like a bridge all of the gnomes began to walk up the lines of green, red, yellow and blue.  Flat Stanley joined in the line and when he reached the top of the rainbow, Swoooosh!

Flat Stanley was swooshed back to the tree in Nana and Papa’s yard.

“Wow!  That was fun!”  Flat Stanley exclaimed as he ran back across the yard and up the driveway.  He has a great imagination.  His smile was wide and eyes were bright as he went inside for lunch.

I hope your smile is wide too!  Enjoy your day and please subscribe, so that Nana can send you an email when a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.

Flat Stanley Explores Spring Flowers in Massachusetts

Flat Stanley awoke very early this morning.  He tossed and turned in his bed a bit, tried to get his pillow fluffed up just so, hoping to get back to sleep; but sleep wouldn’t come.

So, he trotted downstairs and poured a bowl of his favorite cereal, Cheerios! He likes the little circles and the crunchy chrunch as you munch.

After breakfast, Flat Stanley decided to go out and see what was going on in the yard.  There were no workermen working on Nana and Papa’s house, so he strolled out back.  He was surprised to see how many plants that were just bushes yesterday, had beautiful flowers blooming.

The hotter days really do sprout pretty flowers, he was thinking as he took a selfie with a few of them.

The rhododendron stands nearly as tall as the old farmhouse.  It’s covered in pretty purple blossoms that had yet to open, but there were a few starting to sprout their beauty.

The dogwood is one of Grandma Teresa’s favorite flowers.  Whenever Nana and Papa go for a ride in the car, she points them out and admires their beauty.  The Dogwood Tree is the state tree of Virginia…or is it the state flower?  Maybe someone in Virginia will tell Flat Stanley in the comments below.

Nana loves her pretty pink lilacs!  This bush is huge too, but you can’t stay close to it for too long.  The bees really like it and they need a safe place to buzz around.  So Flat Stanley left them to gather their nectar and do the pollination thing they do so well to help grow a lot of the food we eat.  They don’t call them worker bees for nothing, we really rely on them.

When Flat Stanley got near the chicken coop, they were very loud this morning.  They were squawking for extra treats!  So Flat Stanley ran into the barn and grabbed a few handfuls of treats.  Did you know that chickens like to eat grit?  It’s like gravel and it helps their food digest through their gullet.  They like to eat hard oyster shells that are crushed into small pieces too.

The chickens were happy to have Flat Stanley bring them extra treats today.

Flat Stanley walked back to the house and Nana was outside.  She was pulling weeds and admiring the Iris that bloomed this week.

“Oh there you are Flat Stanley,” Nana said with a smile as he trotted up.  Look at how pretty this Iris looks today!  Did you know this was my sister Valerie’s favorite flower?  I planted them all in a row here beside my porch the year she died.  I think of her and her beautiful soul when they bloom.

Nana’s smile was shadowed a bit…she seemed happy and sad at the same time.  But when she leaned down to smell the flower, it was all smiles.

I hope this finds you smiling too, hug your loved ones a little tighter tonight.  Our world needs more hugs, and of course smiles!  Please subscribe and Nana will send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley adventure is posted.

Flat Stanley on the Scaffold

Flat Stanley watched the workermen working on Nana and Papa’s house all day from early in the morning until late in the afternoon.  It was a hot day today, rising over 85 degrees.

Nana brought the workermen some ice water to drink in the afternoon.  Flat Stanley asked if they needed any help, but they said they were just finishing up for the day.

After covering the entire home in a beautiful colonial cream siding, they loaded their work truck with all of the tools and off they drove to have dinner with their families.

After he watched them leave, Flat Stanley went through the house trying all of the windows.  Someone has to make sure that they all work is what he was thinking.

When he trotted around to the front of the house, he was singing his own happy song.  Do you know what song makes Flat Stanley happy?

“Bibbidi-bobbidi-BOO” from the Cinderella movie!

“Salagadoola mechicka boola bibbidi-bobbidi-boo

Put ’em together and what have you got“

Wow!  Flat Stanley was surprised to see the front of the house nearly completely covered in the pretty siding now too!

The workermen left their big scaffolding up.  They used it to get the highest peeks of the siding in place.  As he walked and dipped along the rock wall out front his eyes kept skipping back to the scaffold ladder.

You know he wanted to, you know he had to; you know he did!

He climbed the scaffolding to the very tippity top.

Nana came out to call Flat Stanley in for dinner and could hear the singing coming from way up high.

“Salagadoola mechicka boola bibbidi-bobbidi-boo

Put ’em together and what have you got“

“Flat Stanley!” Nana shouted, “what are you trying to do, hurt Nana by giving me heart palpitations?”  That’s when your heart beats really fast and it feels like it’s going to come out of your chest, you know like after you run really fast for a long time, or when you’re really scared.

Flat Stanley giggled and began working his way down the scaffolding.  He was still smiling as he ran toward Nana and chased the kitty shinzee up the walk.

I hope this finds you smiling too!
