Flat Stanley Plays “Digger Dan”

Flat Stanley got up really early today.  Long before Nana and Papa made their coffee, he ran outside to watch the workermen play in the dirt.

Digger Dan was using the monstrous claw machine to dig a hole in the earth that will one day be the basement in Nana and Papa’s new home.

Flat Stanley’s heart was racing and he was so excited when Digger Dan hollered over at him to join him in the big machine!  He ran over the big rocks that Digger Dan had pulled out of the raw hole in the ground and then climbed up on the loud, rumbling machine and into the controllers cabin!

Flat Stanley got to use the controls to pick up dirt from the gigantic hole and then drive the digger machine over to the mountain of dirt and dump the claw of dirt on top of the growing mountain.  Back and forth, time and time again he’d go.

This is when the song hit him and came bubbling up and out of his mouth in his usual high pitch.

“Dig it uh oh oh
Dig it
Dig it uh oh oh, (oh)”

Digger Dan let him know really nicely that Flat Stanley was kind of hurting his ears; but Flat Stanley persisted.  Digger Dan soon found himself singing along with him and enjoying the silly song!

“Dig it uh oh oh
Dig it
Dig it uh oh oh, (oh)”

They sang together.

Nana came out to find Flat Stanley up on top of a giant pile of dirt in the clawed digger machine!  They were trying to get a heavy piece of bedrock out of the crazy big hole in the earth, and it was making the whole digger machine rock back and forth with only the claw itself providing some balance.

Digger Dan looked over and knew I was worried about the little cutout cutie rocking it at the controls.  So, he had Flat Stanley ride the big machine off of the mountain of dirt and Nana brought Flat Stanley inside for breakfast.

“I got to BE “Digger Dan!” he exclaimed with excitement.  “He let me move the lever controls and everything!”  “Nana, did you know that the cabin spins in circles if you turn it around and around?”

Flat Stanley went on with his chatter throughout breakfast.  He was one happy boy today!

After breakfast, Flat Stanley looked out of the window and saw snow flying!  Yes, snow in April! “Nana! Look!!” Flat Stanley shouted.

“When is spring coming?  I’m ready for tulips and forsythia flowers!” I replied in utter disbelief as I finished up the morning dishes watching the snow fly out the window.  “This is one crazy spring!”

Unfortunately, the snow made the grounds and dirt piles turn to mud and started clogging up the machinery, so the workermen had to leave.

Flat Stanley couldn’t wipe the smile from his face all day though, it was such an exciting morning!  The song in his heart stayed with him all day long.

“Dig it uh oh oh
Dig it
Dig it uh oh oh, (oh)”

It was kind of catchy, even Nana found herself singing the tune after putting Flat Stanley to bed with a beautiful smile that wouldn’t leave his face.  His smile was catchy.  She left his room smiling too.

Flat Stanley and the Sky Bucket

Flat Stanley was enjoying his morning breakfast.  Today, Nana made scrambled eggs with cheese made from goats milk.  The chickens lay the biggest eggs, just one egg and Flat Stanley is full.  While he was finishing up his egg, he looked out the window and saw the big claw machine carrying a full tree up the driveway!  He quickly brought his empty plate to Nana in the kitchen and ran for the door.

As he ran around the house he heard the loud chainsaw cutting trees and looked up.  When he saw the big bucket truck carrying a man with a chainsaw way up high in the air, he jumped up and down and ran back into the house!

“Nana, Nana come quick! You’ve got to see this!” Flat Stanley shouted in his high pitched voice that gets ever so higher when he’s excited.

Flat Stanley grabbed my hand and led me to the door, and then around the house.  It was a sight to see!  The bucket truck was way up high in the sky!

I asked Flat Stanley if he would like to do that job.  Flat Stanley looked at me in wide eyed wonder and then shook his head from side to side.  “No, NO Way,” Flat Stanley replied. “I’d like to drive the trucks on the ground though, like Bobcat Bob” Flat Stanley said.

Would you like to do this bucket job way up high in the sky?  Let us know in the comments below.

They were pushing the dirt around, lifting logs and creating a big flat space where Nana and Papa’s new house will be built.

Flat Stanley sat on the rock wall out front and watched them for most of the day.  It was fun to see the big dirt pile growing bigger and bigger.  He was careful to stay out of the way today as there were trees coming down with loud crashes from way up high in the sky.  Then the big claw machine would pick up the logs and carry them to the log stack that’s growing higher than a house.

A giant would have fun playing lincoln logs with that stack!

The chickens liked eating the little bugs that were gathering on the wood pile.  Flat Stanley was happy to see the chickens running free today.  They seem to be getting used to all of the loud noises around them.  Nana saw Flat Stanley looking at the chicken’s little ears.

“Did you know that you can tell what color eggs your chicken will lay based on the color of the little flap around the chicken’s ears?” Nana asked Flat Stanley.  Flat Stanley thought Nana was playing another one of her little jokes, but no, she was serious.  “It’s true.” she said.  “So, you learned something new today!”

Nana has a lot of crazy facts stored up in that brain of hers. Flat Stanley thought as he looked up at her smiling his beautiful smile.  Nana smiled back at him…crazy kid.

Flat Stanley “The WorkerMan”

Today, Flat Stanley enjoyed a trip to Home Depot with Nana and Papa.  Home Depot is a BIG super store filled with builder stuff for workermen!  Flat Stanley LOVED this store!  He grunted as soon as he walked in, just like a big burly WorkerMan! “Grunt, Grunt!!”

Nana and Papa were excited to see the gardening section “springing” to life with potted flowers and vegetables!  We’ll be ready to plant very soon!

Flat Stanley is ready to ride the riding lawn mower with Briana this summer!  He was practicing in Home Depot today.

“RMMMMMmmmmm, RRMMMMMmmmmmm…” he sounded like a big motor as he road the shiny yellow display mower in a circle around the store.

Nana chased him down and cornered him as he came around the second isle.  “Flat Stanley!  You’re going to get in trouble riding around here on that!!”   He parked it where he started out and his head looked at the ground, before looking up at Nana through his eyebrows.  He felt bad for what he did.  But it was so much fun!  He cannot wait for summertime to cut the grass for Nana and Papa at the farm!  I wonder if Briana will let him?

Flat Stanley didn’t stay out of trouble long though.  There are a lot of things for Flat Stanley to get into in this big store!  He found the lift that allows employees to reach the highest shelves within this big warehouse store.  Again, he couldn’t help himself, it was like a burning fire in his belly, he just had to ride it! He climbed up and hit the switch.  UUUUpppppp up up Flat Stanley rose!!

He was nearly to the big florescent lights when Nana hit the button for him to return to earth.  “Flat Stanley!!  You’re not allowed to do that!” She helped him off of the big machine and tried to keep a better eye on him so he wouldn’t get into more trouble.

Flat Stanley saw a workshop going on, they were teaching you how to lay tile flooring.  Flat Stanley had to try it!  He just had to.  This time he did ask Nana first though, and Nana said YES!!

He was so happy wielding the big hammer like the worker man!  He huffed as he rose the hammer way above his head and then CRASH, whoops, he broked the tile.  Well this day isn’t going as well as we had hoped.  The worker man was very helpful showing him how you just gently tap the side of the tile to line it up with the next when you’re laying your new floor.  This wasn’t as much fun, but he tried it before moving along.

“If I’m going to be a WorkerMan,” Flat Stanley said, I’m going to need a big red toolbelt!  Flat Stanley strapped the BIG Belt around his waist.  It had a lot of pockets for tools.  Unfortunately, it was so heavy without any tools in it that Flat Stanley took one step forward and BOOOOM!  He was down.  He fell forward and couldn’t get up.

Nana helped Flat Stanley remove the tool belt and was ready to lift him into the cart like a baby, to keep him out of trouble at this point!

He was with Papa around the next isle when Nana heard the pop, Pop POP and had to run to see what they were up to.  As she rounded the corner she found BOTH Papa and Flat Stanley with the Bubble Cushion.

It was an entire roll of those poppable bubbles you get when you order breakable items in the mail.  They were pop pop popping them in the isle!  “PAPA!! What are you teaching him?!” Nana asked in dismay.  Papa smiled and winked at Flat Stanley, “Noone can resist an entire roll of a pop pop pop Bubble Cushion!”

Oh goodness, this shopping trip was not going as planned.  Nana was upset.  Flat Stanley wanted to make it up to Nana, so when they passed the spring Easter Lillies, he hopped up into the flower’s greenery and when Nana passed, he tapped her on the shoulder.

Nana couldn’t help but smile, and yes, she put them in her cart.

We hope that Flat Stanley made you smile today and if you SUBSCRIBE, Nana will send you a smile tomorrow!  You’ll receive an email whenever there is a new Flat Stanley Adventure posted.

Flat Stanley watches over the Chickens

Flat Stanley woke up to the sound of a large boom that shook the house!  He knew the workermen must be running those big machines and couldn’t wait to put his clothes on!  He remembered the snow we had yesterday and grabbed his thickest sweatshirt and beanie knit hat (like Bobcat Bob’s) before going out to see what the noise was all about.

That BIG Black box is a called a dipsy dumpster!  That’s a funny name.  I’ll bet you can’t say that three time’s really fast!

The truck driver explained to Flat Stanley that the stumps were going to come out of the ground today and they’d be put in the dipsty dumpster.

There are a lot of stumps that need to come out of the ground before Nana and Papa’s house can be built.

This BIG claw machine was clawing up under each root and then the driver operator would lift the big claw up high in the air with the root in the claw and dump each one in the dipsy dumpster trash barrel.

Flat Stanley was playing on a stump, watching the big clawed machine and feeling the ground shake under his body.  Then Nana hollered, “Flat Stanley come off of that stump, here comes the digger!”

Flat Stanley quickly jumped down off of the stump and ran really fast across the driveway to safety!  That stump is gone now.  It was sitting where Nana and Papa’s living room will be.  The roots run very deep on these old stumps.

All of the shaking and pounding on the raw earth made the chickens very nervous.  Nana and Flat Stanley moved the chickens to the other side of the yard, far far away from the noise.  They gave them special treats and Flat Stanley stayed outside to play with them.

Flat Stanley did a nice job of keeping the chickens happy today.  We hope you are happy too!  If Flat Stanley made you smile today, please Subscribe so that Nana can send you a smile in your email box the next time she posts a Flat Stanley Adventure!
