4th of July with Flat Stanley

Flat Stanley wants to wish you all a VERY Happy Fourth of July!  It’s a special day for our country. Independence day is a day to celebrate being an American by what we call patriotism.

Nana loves the BBQ’s and fireworks and parades with flags flying high!  In this parade, George Washington was on the grand finale’ float.  It’s a big flowery flatbed of a truck that is decorated with fancy chairs for the parade stars to ride on.

Flat Stanley saw George Washington and immediately recognized him as our first president.  You know he wanted to, you know he had to; you know he DID!

Flat Stanley jumped right up on that float and shook President George Washington’s hand.

Nana went to get Flat Stanley down and overheard their conversation before taking him by the hand.

“Mr. Washington, what do you think of our world today?”

“Well, Flat Stanley, I think there’s one thing all of us could do to make America better and better.  Number one, I think is being kind to one another.  Are you a kind person Flat Stanley?” George Washington asked him.

“I’m very kind,” he responded quickly; “why, see that chair that I hauled all the way from home carried on my flat back?”  I let that nice man have it, because he has a cane, and was struggling standing too long.”

George Washington smiled a happy smile as Nana helped Flat Stanley back to the street side, allowing the parade to continue.

“Keep up the good work, Flat Stanley!  Each and every one of us can make this country a better place just by being more kind to one another.  Showing kindness by accepting and loving each other is what makes America the wonderful nation that it has always been!”

So, as you’re watching the fireworks, parades and enjoying BBQ’s today…try to think of how we can be better citizens of this great nation.

I hope you enjoy doing what you love best today with family and friends.

Nana enjoyed her day watching the Red Sox win!  I will be on vacation this week, so please be on the lookout for more Flat Stanley stories to come next week!

Flat Stanley Celebrates Briana’s Birthday!

July 1st has come in hot as a tater tot straight out of the oven!

New Englander’s aren’t used to this kind of heat!

“This feels like Texas!” Auntie Terri declared.

But it’s a day for BBQ and water sports, so let the fun begin!

Happy Birthday Briana!!

Slipping and a sliding Flat Stanley got a nice running jump and flung himself like a cherry from a slingshot straight across the slippery slip and slide!

“Weeeeeeee!!!” The water sprayed in his ear so he had to shake his head to let it come out.  Do you ever get water in your ears?  It’s not a fun feeling, but it shook out fast and he was back up and ready to slide again!

Briana’s friend Shay had her style down flying in like a goose on the loose.

“Swishhhhh and sliiiiiiide” Shay cried as she flew across the slippery plastic.

“Hot days are the best of days for getting soaked!”

This was a fun birthday party!  Flat Stanley liked his light up rings and fancy glow in the dark bling in the party bags.  He helped Nana pick out the funnest stuff and the kids were having a blast.

All that running, slipping and sliding made them hungry!

Nana came out with a platter of watermelon and cantaloupe and the juice dripped down Flat Stanley’s chin, but he enjoyed every bite.

The BBQ started smelling really good as his belly began to rumble and tumble.

Flat Stanley went over to the grill and helped Uncle Dana, the Grill Master in Chief!  Flat Stanley was a good assistant and was very careful not the let the flames get out of control.

It was a hot, but very fun day for a birthday!

Happy Birthday Briana!!

Flat Stanley in Virginia

Flat Stanley was hot on the trail to Virginia again.  He was missing his bestie Alexa and had to find a way.  He heard the train rolling down the tracks and hopped aboard!

“All aboard!!” The captain shouted.

Flat Stanley waved his arms to signal his safe landing on the train; and he was off for another adventure!

Alexa met him at the train station.  The first thing she noticed is that he had lost his red suspenders.  She loves those red suspenders on Flat Stanley; it’s his badge of honor for being such a great farmer and taking care of the chickens.

Flat Stanley explained how well he’s been eating at Nana’s house and well, the suspenders just didn’t fit anymore.  You know what Alexa did?  She bought him new red suspenders!

After shopping and dinner, they headed back to the house.  Flat Stanley was so happy to be sporting his larger red suspenders!  He missed them!

Flat Stanley climbed up on their big couch and grabbed the remote control.  He loves clicking through the channels!

He started with the cooking channel.  He loves to watch chef’s create their masterpieces.  Today he was wishing for taste-o-vision.  He wanted to taste the bbq’d chicken!

Alexa was getting hungry watching the cooking show too.  She went into the kitchen and rummaged around for a nice snack.

Flat Stanley enjoyed the fresh fruit!

“Fruity Tutti, Fresh and Juicy,” Flat Stanley sang out.  He made Alexa laugh.

When they started cooking with sardines, Flat Stanley wrinkled his nose and Alexa copied him.  Can you wrinkle your nose?

They changed the channel to something more fun!

I don’t know what you call this, but it was LOUD and screechy!  Flat Stanley decided it was movie time.

Flat Stanley knew that “A Wrinkle in Time” is one of Alexa’s favorite movies.  They watched the astral travelers travel to a far away planet with  Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which.  They love watching this movie together.

After the movie, Flat Stanley was tired, so Alexa tucked him in on the couch and you can see he was smiling really big.

He loves spending time with his bestie.  Nighty Night Bestie!   I hope you wake up with that same smile on your face.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe and share Flat Stanley’s Adventures with your family and friends.  Smiles are meant to be passed along!

Flat Stanley Joins the Electricians

“Fire it up and let’s roll!” Flat Stanley said when he saw the electricians truck pull up in the yard next door to work on Nana and Papa’s new house.

He went out and took care of the chickens, giving them fresh water and hay and collecting the eggs.  Today he had dried mealworms and oyster shells as treats.  They do love their treats, and happy chickens make for tasty eggs!

After compiling a dozen in a leftover egg tray that friends save for us, Flat Stanley trotted next door with a swing in his step.  He was ready for adventure!

“Hi guy! I’m Flat Stanley,” he announced to the first worker man he saw in the house.

“Well hello there little man, I’m Elliot the Electrician!” he replied with a smile.

“I brought you some fresh eggs, do you need any help in here?” said Flat Stanley.

“Ohh electricity can be a very dangerous thing to work with Flat Stanley, but I’ll keep you safe and thank you for these eggs!  My family will love them.”

Flat Stanley was indeed a good worker.  He helped him tie the blue line tight into the box that Nana’s washing machine will plug into soon.

Then he had to do some work up high for the ceiling fan that will keep Nana and Papa cool in the summer.

“Louisville slugger coming to the rescue,” Flat Stanley said with a smile as he joined the guys working on the ceiling wires.

When he strung the wire way up high, it was a bit heavy for him and Swwiiisshhhh… down he came flying like a monkey on a trapeze wire.

“Ahhhahahahahaaahhhhh” he hollared like Tarzan.”  Do you know who Tarzan is?  Well he lived in the jungle and swung from thick vines from tree to tree and he had this most particular shout he did as he flew through the air.  Can you do that shout?

“Whew…I think I’ll stick with the ground wiring.” Flat Stanley said after his flight through the air.

So he got down on his knees like Theodore and began threading the wires through the electrical boxes with him.  This is where Papa’s plugs will plug in his TV.  Papa is excited about his new TV, he says every house should start off with a new TV, and the bigger the better for watching the Red Sox play!  He loves his Red Sox baseball team.  Do you have a favorite team?

Today, Flat Stanley’s favorite team was Elliot’s Electric Company.  They kept him safe and taught him a lot of new skills.  Flat Stanley was a really good helper and enjoyed the smiles the day brought.  I hope this finds you smiling too.  Enjoy your day and thank you for sharing Flat Stanley’s Adventures with your friends and family.

Stir Fry Stanley

Nana and Papa were on their way home from their weekend getaway when they stopped for lunch at Koto’s Japanese Steakhouse.

We decided to sit at the cooking table where the chef cooks the food right in front of you!

Flat Stanley was really excited about this lunch!  There was bamboo climbing up the walls and the people were really friendly.

Then the waitress rolled out a huge cart of cooking supplies, and set it next to the cooking table.

Flat Stanley asked the little guy up on top if he was the chef.

“No he replied, I just help put the flames out in case they get out of hand.”

The chef came out and heated up the grill very quickly.

“THIS grill is on FIRE!” he sang.  This let everyone know it was part of the show and not to worry.

His little buddy had to come out and put out the flames!

When the chef started putting the food on the grill, Flat Stanley asked if he could help.

“You’ve got to move it move it,” Chef Nur sang.  He liked to sing while he cooked.  He knew a lot of songs.

Flat Stanley joined in when he started doing the WHIP WHIP Nae Nae song!  That’s one of Flat Stanley’s favorites!

Then Chef Nur and Flat Stanley got down to business and put all the veggies, rice and meat on the hot griddle.  It was sizzling hot!

“The key to good stir fry is a sizzling hot pan and quick movement.  Like I said, you’ve got to move it move it…” Chef Nur sang again. “Fast and Steady, Fast and Steady.”

Flat Stanley helped Chef Nur put the food on Nana and Papa’s plate and they devoured it!  That means they ate it really fast.  It was so yummy!

When they got home, Flat Stanley decided to go to a friend’s house and show them what he learned today.

Emilee and Devin were really fast learners too!  Flat Stanley showed them how to safely chop chop chop.

“You have to be really careful with the big knife,” he explained.

“Turn it up high and stir like you fly, fast and steady on the ready!”

Emilee and Devin are wonderful chef’s and they were so happy to plate up some food for the family.

When Flat Stanley went in to let Alissa know that dinner was ready, he copied Nana’s screachy line; “Ohhhh it’s time for, DIIIINNNNNAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhh” He said.

As he was hanging on the last part of the ahhhhh, he noticed the beautiful artwork Alissa was working on and cut the last of the ahhhhhh short.

He went over to look a little closer.  She showed him how to shade and shadow and he showed her how to move it move it, so they could get to DINNnnaaaahhh!!!!

It was delicious and everyone was smiling!  I hope this finds you smiling too.  Enjoy your day and thank  you for sharing the pics!

Nana and Papa Take Flat Stanley on a Getaway

It was a rough week for Nana, Papa and the family.  Flat Stanley tried to cheer everyone up, but sometimes, pain runs too deep for smiles.

Finally, Flat Stanley brought smiles back to the family!

Nana decided it was a good time for a little getaway. Sometimes we all need a break from the day to day routine.

Nana made reservations across the state and loaded the luggage, Papa and Flat Stanley into the car for a weekend getaway.

About halfway  across the state of Massachusetts, the driver’s side windshield wiper cracked and began to slap with each stroke like a snake.

Flat Stanley began singing..

“Now watch me whip whip
Watch me nae nae (want me do it?)…”

Nana pulled over into the Walmart parking lot and around to the auto garage area.  She went inside and talked to the nice lady at the cash register about the problem.

“Oh, this isn’t a problem at all,” she promised. “Just sit here and we’ll take care of it for you.”

Flat Stanley sat beside Nana, but after a few minutes, he got kinda bored.

Flat Stanley decided to go check out the garage.

The garage was noisy with large air compressors to blow up a flat tire and oh the tires, there was an entire room of tires!  Flat Stanley loves playing on tires in the playground.  He loves the tire rope swing, but even climbing on still stacks of tires is not as boring as sitting in a waiting room.

Michael the mechanic was a little upset when he came back into the garage and found Flat Stanley’s feet flying through the center of the mountain of tires.

He didn’t get too mad though.  He decided Flat Stanley needed a lesson on how to change a wiper blade, so Flat Stanley stayed to help Michael put new windshield wipers on the car.

This little getaway would be much safer now!  As Flat Stanley was sitting in his favorite cup holder for the remainder of the trip, Nana was smiling and commenting on what a nice job Flat Stanley did putting the new windshield wipers on the car.  I hope this finds you smiling too!

Flat Stanley Goes Fishing

Auntie Terri surprised Flat Stanley when she told him she was taking him fishing!  Flat Stanley was so excited!  He had never been fishing.

“Will I catch a shark?” Flat Stanley asked.

Auntie Terri had to giggle at the thought of a shark rising up from the lake where they were going fishing.

As they reached the dock beside the lake, Flat Stanley was swinging from the umbrella pole rising from the table.

Auntie Terri was threading her line through the hoops on the pole and getting her bait ready to roll.  Flat Stanley slid down the pole to help her.

“Look at that boat, are we ready to go?  My sea legs are waiting to carry me ‘to and fro’.”

When everyone had their lines tied tight and the poles ready to go, they carefully walked down the dock and into the waiting boat.

“OK, watch your step there Flat Stanley, here we go, up up yeah!” He was on board the boat!

Auntie Terri headed to the front of the boat, she wanted to drive the boat and take everyone on a wild ride across the lake.  But Flat Stanley got there first and said, “Buckle up!”

They road across the lake with the wind and the sun behind them.  The air felt good and the fish were jumping!

Flat Stanley stopped the boat in the middle of the lake and grabbed a pole.

“Here Sharky Sharky, come here and bite on my line!”

Something was nibbling on his line.  He could feel the tap tap on his pole and saw the tip bending, he reeled it in as fast as he could but, oh the fish got away.  Flat Stanley put more bait on his line and cast his pole out to the deepest waters.  He waited, and waited.

Nothing was coming to eat.  The fish weren’t hungry today.

Flat Stanley decided he’d go down in the water to entice them to eat.

But it wasn’t a good idea.  You see, Flat Stanley never took swimming lessons.  He didn’t know how to swim!

“Don’t Worry, we’ll save you there buddy!” Auntie Terri shouted.

She got the net down in the water right under him and fished his little body out of the water.

  He was ok!

After his swim Auntie Terri hung him out to dry in the warm afternoon sun.

“Is this what they call line dancing?” Flat Stanley asked as he shimmied his body on the tight wire under the clothespins.

It was quite an adventure today, but at least he was smiling!  I hope this finds you smiling too!

Flat Stanley was Jammin’!

Flat Stanley and Nana have one thing in common.  They love to sing!  Everywhere they go, they’re singing.  Nana picks her loudest and most annoying songs to sing when she’s doing chores.  If anyone complains, she says that it makes doing chores less humdrum (which is Nana’s silly way to say boring).

“So, I’ll stop singing these annoying songs if you’d like to do my chores.” Everyone stops complaining then.

When she finishes dinner and wants people to come to the table Nana has this really loud and screechy “oooooh it’s time for …. DINNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” that makes everyone come quickly, because if they don’t come, she keeps doing it.  Again, and again…and again as needed.  Usually it only takes one dinner call.

Flat Stanley’s favorite music is hip hop!  He says it makes him hip and hop better.  I think he’s right.  The beat does make you move in your seat.

He had his headphones on this morning and was singing really loud.

“Two plus two is four, minus one that’s three, quick maths..”

When he took the headphones off, the song was still stuck in his head.  Does this ever happen to you, when you hear a song and can’t get it out of your head for the rest of the day?

What’s your favorite kind of music?

Nana’s of course is anything by Bruce Springsteen, but she and Papa love all of that old rock that they call classic.

Flat Stanley likes to make up songs.  He’ll get a nice backbeat playing in his head and the words just flow.

“I’m missing my Alexa, she is the very besta.  Besties are the besta forever and ever aftahhh!  I need pics with Alexa, please send them rather fasta! Booo diddy boooo diddy, hip hip HOP!”

His smile was so big as he was dancing around the kitchen.  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Have a nice night!

Flat Stanley and his Suspenders

Nana was sitting out on the back porch with an iced tea in her hand this afternoon.  It was a hot day.  She was pondering Flat Stanley and all they’ve done since he was sent here by her granddaughter Alexa.

When Flat Stanley first moved to the farm with Nana and Papa in Massachusetts, he was slim and trim and had no idea what a chicken ate, or how to care for them.  He was a wide eyed boy full of wonder, with that beautiful smile.  He learned quickly.

He never lost this wide eyed sense of wonder.  He loves everyone and appreciates all of the kindness Nana and Papa give him.  He likes to return the favor by helping out on the farm in any way he can.

When Nana saw how well Flat Stanley did on the farm, to show her appreciation; she awarded him with a brand new pair of red suspenders.  He loved his red suspenders, and he loves helping Nana, still.

Yesterday it was gardening, today it was feeding the chickens and helping her gather and cook the eggs for Papa.  He made sure the chickens had plenty of water.  Today it was over 90 degrees and very humid.  Chickens can handle the heat, but they do need extra water; just like humans.

Nana likes to repay kindness and help around the house and farm, in any way she can.  With Flat Stanley, it was easy.  He loves her chicken fried steak, macaroni and cheese and dill potatoes with sour cream.

With the added calories in his diet, Flat Stanley soon found he didn’t need the suspenders to keep his pants up.  With all the work he was doing to help Nana and Papa, he wasn’t getting fat, but he was filling out and growing.

So the red suspenders ended up in his drawer upstairs in the bureau.  Nana calls it a bureau, but Flat Stanley knows that’s just a fancy word for “dresser.”  He still calls it a dresser, and has his red suspenders rolled up in a nice round circle in the corner of  his top drawer.  It’s a daily reminder of when he was awarded the label of “farmer,” a label he wears proudly.

Just looking at those suspenders makes him smile.  I hope this finds you smiling too!  If so, please subscribe so that Nana can send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley adventure is posted.

Flat Stanley Yells BINGO!

Nana and Papa kept their promise to Grandma Great.  They promised her last week that they would take her to go play BINGO this week.  Keeping a promise is important to Nana and Papa.  Do you keep your promises?  It’s so very important that we try to follow through with what we say we’re going to do.

When they pulled up to the bingo hall with Grandma Great, Papa was not a very happy man.  He doesn’t like BINGO very much.  But, he’s a trooper and likes to make others smile; so in he went.

We bought our stack of BINGO cards and Flat Stanley helped Nana put the colored cards in the order of when each game will be played.  The first game was on the blue bingo card and the last game was on the magenta colored card.

Papa got the bingo dabbers out and began dotting all of the free spaces on the cards.  Flat Stanley liked this BINGO hall.

There were a lot of nice ladies here at the senior center.  They loved Flat Stanley and his silly ways.

He decided to entertain them while they waited for BINGO to begin.

What could be more fitting than the BINGO Song?

“B-I-N-G-O ~ B-I-N-G-O ~ B-I-N-G-O and BINGO was his name-OOOoooo,” he sang the whole song and everyone clapped along.  They loved it and some even joined in to sing with him.

Then it was time for the games to begin!

Flat Stanley helped Papa with his cards.  He didn’t like how fast the lady was calling the numbers and Papa had six cards to keep up with.  When B-2 was called, Flat Stanley shouted “BINGO!!!!”

He and Papa had been sitting on that number for what seemed an eternity; and that’s a VERY long time.

The kind man came over to double check their numbers and cleared them with a “GOOD BINGO!”

Guess what Papa won?

He won chocolates!  Now, they didn’t know he’s not supposed to have chocolates, but he loves them so much he was smiling!

When BINGO was over we went for a nice lunch at Holy Cannoli’s.  This place in Worcester makes the best sandwiches and pastries.

After a fun day, we dropped Grandma Great off at home.  She got out of the car and said, “even though I didn’t win, I still had a lot of fun!”

It was a fun day and Briana LOVED the chocolate treats when Papa opened them to share with her and the grandkids.  This made EVERYone smile with the taste of chocolate dancing on their tongues.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Enjoy a beautiful day!
