4th of July with Flat Stanley

Flat Stanley wants to wish you all a VERY Happy Fourth of July!  It’s a special day for our country. Independence day is a day to celebrate being an American by what we call patriotism.

Nana loves the BBQ’s and fireworks and parades with flags flying high!  In this parade, George Washington was on the grand finale’ float.  It’s a big flowery flatbed of a truck that is decorated with fancy chairs for the parade stars to ride on.

Flat Stanley saw George Washington and immediately recognized him as our first president.  You know he wanted to, you know he had to; you know he DID!

Flat Stanley jumped right up on that float and shook President George Washington’s hand.

Nana went to get Flat Stanley down and overheard their conversation before taking him by the hand.

“Mr. Washington, what do you think of our world today?”

“Well, Flat Stanley, I think there’s one thing all of us could do to make America better and better.  Number one, I think is being kind to one another.  Are you a kind person Flat Stanley?” George Washington asked him.

“I’m very kind,” he responded quickly; “why, see that chair that I hauled all the way from home carried on my flat back?”  I let that nice man have it, because he has a cane, and was struggling standing too long.”

George Washington smiled a happy smile as Nana helped Flat Stanley back to the street side, allowing the parade to continue.

“Keep up the good work, Flat Stanley!  Each and every one of us can make this country a better place just by being more kind to one another.  Showing kindness by accepting and loving each other is what makes America the wonderful nation that it has always been!”

So, as you’re watching the fireworks, parades and enjoying BBQ’s today…try to think of how we can be better citizens of this great nation.

I hope you enjoy doing what you love best today with family and friends.

Nana enjoyed her day watching the Red Sox win!  I will be on vacation this week, so please be on the lookout for more Flat Stanley stories to come next week!

Flat Stanley was Jammin’!

Flat Stanley and Nana have one thing in common.  They love to sing!  Everywhere they go, they’re singing.  Nana picks her loudest and most annoying songs to sing when she’s doing chores.  If anyone complains, she says that it makes doing chores less humdrum (which is Nana’s silly way to say boring).

“So, I’ll stop singing these annoying songs if you’d like to do my chores.” Everyone stops complaining then.

When she finishes dinner and wants people to come to the table Nana has this really loud and screechy “oooooh it’s time for …. DINNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” that makes everyone come quickly, because if they don’t come, she keeps doing it.  Again, and again…and again as needed.  Usually it only takes one dinner call.

Flat Stanley’s favorite music is hip hop!  He says it makes him hip and hop better.  I think he’s right.  The beat does make you move in your seat.

He had his headphones on this morning and was singing really loud.

“Two plus two is four, minus one that’s three, quick maths..”

When he took the headphones off, the song was still stuck in his head.  Does this ever happen to you, when you hear a song and can’t get it out of your head for the rest of the day?

What’s your favorite kind of music?

Nana’s of course is anything by Bruce Springsteen, but she and Papa love all of that old rock that they call classic.

Flat Stanley likes to make up songs.  He’ll get a nice backbeat playing in his head and the words just flow.

“I’m missing my Alexa, she is the very besta.  Besties are the besta forever and ever aftahhh!  I need pics with Alexa, please send them rather fasta! Booo diddy boooo diddy, hip hip HOP!”

His smile was so big as he was dancing around the kitchen.  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Have a nice night!

Flat Stanley Finds a Kennel

Flat Stanley sat in his favorite cup holder as he was riding down a country road in Massachusetts with Nana and Papa.  Flat Stanley spotted the dogs on the hillside.  There had to be 100 dogs on that hill.

Nana pulled the car over at Flat Stanley’s request and got out to visit with the dogs.  They all came running to the fence and barking their loud barks.  They were beautiful and had fur in every color, some were really white, some really dark and some had spots and some did not.

“Hey Doggie Doggie, Here Doggie Doggie,” Flat Stanley shouted.

The dogs came charging down the hillside.  Thankfully, there was a fence or Nana and Flat Stanley may have gotten themselves into trouble.  The barking was loud and somewhat scary.  There were so many of them!

“I know if I could get in there with some nice doggie bones and treats, that they’d be happy dogs and wouldn’t bark at me,” Flat Stanley said.

They were really barking.  Nana and Flat Stanley quickly got back into the car.  That fence didn’t look very high and these dogs were big and very loud.

Flat Stanley came home to the chickens and instead of grabbing doggie bones and treats, he grabbed chicken food and treats.  He helped Nana clean the coop out today.  If chicken beaks could smile, the chickens would be smiling.  I hope this finds you smiling too.  Thanks for subscribing so that Nana can send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.

Two Parties in Two Days? Flat Stanley is LOVING Life!

Auntie Terri came over with a surprise for Flat Stanley today.

“We’re having a party!” It’s Shay’s birthday and we’re going to have a BBQ today!”

“Two parties in two days?” Flat Stanley couldn’t contain his excitement.  You know how he does it; he tucks his hands up under his arms like a chicken?  Well he was doing that and flapping his wings.

“Cluck Cluck little hens, I’m the one at the party again!” His smile was so big as he went to feed the chickens today!

When everyone arrived, Flat Stanley got the drinks.  The kids loved the Hi C as blue as the sea.

Flat Stanley was showing off his basketball skills, Joseph and Blain were showing him how it’s really done.  SLAM DUNK!  Joseph was 20 feet from the hoop, and in it went.  This boy has skills.

After shooting some hoops, they sat on the log pile beside the barn and found a little ant.  Joseph named the aunt Adrien.  Blain explained to Nana that the ant was a boy ant and that’s why the ant wouldn’t climb on Nana’s finger.  The ant then went to play hide and seek and snuck inside the crevice, hiding from everyone.

Then Nana came out with BUBBLES!  You know how Nana loves her bubbles.  Flat Stanley was playing with Promise and Blain.  Promise would blow the bubbles and Blain would chase and POP them.  POP POP POP.

Flat Stanley had a lot of fun blowing bubbles with Joseph and Blain too.  This was a fun party!

Promise found the peony flowers on the property and her eyes lit up as bright as her smile.  Nana let Flat Stanley pick one when he asked.  The blooms are so delicate and pretty, just like Promise!  Flat Stanley’s face was just a little red, can you see it.  He was a little embarrassed, but loved the smile this flower brought to Promise’s face when he gave it to her.

But today was all about Shay.  It’s Shay’s birthday!  Shay is Briana’s friend.  Flat Stanley LOVED hanging out with the birthday girl and the “teenagers” that were so cool on the log pile.

Look at their beautiful smiles!  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe, so Nana can send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.

Flat Stanley and the BIG ol’ Egg

Flat Stanley woke up with one thing on his mind today.  That big ol’ egg was waiting to be cracked and he wanted to surprise Nana and Papa with breakfast!

Remember that big ol’ egg that Flat Stanley collected from the coop yesterday?

Flat Stanley carefully retrieved the egg from the refrigerator and got a little dish to crack it into.  He wanted to make breakfast!

He was surprised to see not one, but two yolks fall from the cracked shell of that huge egg.

When Flat Stanley heard Nana coming down the stairs he showed her the one shell and the two yolks.

“Look Nana!  Twin yolks!  That big ol’ ostrich looking egg had two yolks in it!”

“Good, because I’m double hungry this morning,” Nana said with a smile.

Nana helped Flat Stanley turn the stove on and stand with him for safety.  He gingerly dropped the eggs in the pan, and then she smiled when he ever so carefully flipped them without breaking the yolk.  That’s very hard to do!

Nana looked at the fruit basket and noticed a big orange that was ripe and ready to eat.  She sliced that juicy orange as Flat Stanley buttered the bread.  The butter was a bit hard, so he just had to leave it to sit and melt on the warm toast.

Papa was one happy man when he came downstairs.  A nice breakfast was waiting for him.  His smile was huge when he heard about that big plate of two eggs coming from one eggshell!  I hope your smile is big right now too.  Please subscribe so that Nana can send you a note when a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.  Everyone needs a free smile a day!  Share the smiles.

Flat Stanley on the Farm

Flat Stanley woke up to his usual routine of feeding the chickens their favorite treats and grains and then giving them plenty of water.  But when he went to collect the eggs, it was anything but routine today!

Flat Stanley had to hold the JUMBO egg with two hands as he brought it in to show Nana and Papa.

“I think an ostrich snuck in the chicken coop last night and laid a BIG egg,” Flat Stanley exclaimed in his high pitched voice, full of excitement.

“WOWZA!!  That IS a BIG egg!” Nana replied with equally as large eyes showing her surprise.

We couldn’t close the top of the egg container when we put it away and cannot wait to crack it open tomorrow to see if there are two yolks inside.

Today, they enjoyed the fresh fruit, BACON and fried potatoes that Nana made.

Nana and Papa had an appointment to pick out the carpet, tile and other flooring for their new house.  Flat Stanley had fun hiding between the carpet rugs that hung from the high ceiling.

He squeezed his flat body between the tiles and scared Nana as she walked by.

When it was time to go, Flat Stanley found his favorite seat in the cup holder and his stomach growled really loud.  Nana and Papa were hungry too and this made everyone in the car laugh.

Nana looked in the car computer “GPS” for restaurants in the area because we were in a place called Upton, MA.  It’s not as far up the road as a ton, but close. So Papa didn’t know what restaurants were nearby.

The GPS mentioned The Red Rock Grill and we were on our way!

While browsing through the menu, Papa started laughing and asked Flat Stanley if he wanted what they called “Jeb’s Burger.”

Flat Stanley looked at the menu and both agreed that Jeb’s Burger sounded pretty gross.  It has Peanut Butter, Bacon, Pickles and Cheddar Cheese, ON a BURGER with a bun! Would you try it?

Although, noone decided to get that burger, the food was absolutely delicious!  Papa was so happy with his Arctic Char fish that he was literally moaning.  Nana had a salad and Flat Stanley chose the ginger carrot soup.  It was all delicious.

“We’re coming back again, VERY soon,” Nana told the nice waitor as she handed him the payment.

We left and drove by a farm on our way home.

Flat Stanley loved tickling the little hairs on the chinny chin chin of the horse.  He was a handsome fellow and loved eating the fresh hay from Flat Stanley’s hand.

The pig was BIG!  Her name was Ezzie, short for Ezmerelda.  What a beautiful creature with her curious eyes, monstrous snout and cute ears.  Flat Stanley was talking to Ezzie for quite a while.

“What do you like to eat for breakfast?” Flat Stanley asked Ezzie; he continued with “I won’t tell you what I had,” sporting an evil grin.  He’s a crazy boy that loves his bacon, and making Nana smile.  I hope this finds you smiling too.  Please subscribe so that Nana can send you an email whenever a new Adventure with Flat Stanley in Massachusetts is posted.

Flat Stanley Enjoys Shopping with Great Grandma!

When Nana told Flat Stanley she was going to lunch with Grandma Great, Flat Stanley immediately jumped up and began putting his shoes on.

“I want to go too,” he said.

“Well then tie those laces up tight and let’s get!” Nana replied.

Nana and Papa were up in front.  Flat Stanley sat next to Auntie Elaine in the backseat and when Grandma Great got in, he scooted to the middle to make room.

The restaurant was really good!  Flat Stanley loved his macaroni and cheese.  I’m sure it’s as good as the one that Auntie Terri made last week, but Briana forgot to bring some over for Nana to try.  She’s been teasing her all week about it.  Nana likes macaroni and cheese as much as Flat Stanley does!

Auntie Elaine let Flat Stanley try a bite of her steak.  It was delicious!

After a wonderful lunch, it was time for some shopping!

In front of the grocery store there were a lot of beautiful flowers for sale.  Flat Stanley climbed up into the hanging basket and when Nana walked by with Grandma Great he was swinging and singing.

“Magical flowers await you here, magical flowers will greet you there.  Come  buy one, come buy all, magical flowers await you all.”

Nana shook her head and helped Flat Stanley down out of the hanging basket of flowers.

When they got in the store Flat Stanley spotted  his little cart and zoomed up next to Grandma Great.

“Not so fast there Flat Stanley,” Grandma Great said, “I may be older, but I’ll still outshop you!”

Flat Stanley liked moving ahead and helping her shop as they went through the store.  His eyes could see the sodium content on the labels.  She watches how much salt she eats, that’s why she’s so healthy.

When Flat Stanley saw the Cheerios he grabbed one for his own cart!  You know how Flat Stanley loves the crunchy munch of Cheerios!

…and the crunchy munch of pickles are good too.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, and sometimes you don’t.  Flat Stanley likes the crunchy nutty peanut butter, but Papa likes the creamy smooth one.  Which one do you like?

Flat Stanley couldn’t contain himself when he saw the red and blue stars on the cookies!  He jumped up and said “please, please please Nana.”

It was hard to resist his cute face, but Nana didn’t buy the cookies.  But, she told him he could get something from the gumball machine on his way out.

Flat Stanley had some choices to make then!  There were a lot of gumball machines.

Flat Stanley went for the stretchy Fling Shot toy and had a big smile as they left the store.  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe so Nana can send you a free smile every day!

Flat Stanley Celebrates Grandma T’s Birthday!

Flat Stanley had the best day, he got to go out to lunch with Papa’s mom, Grandma T; and share her 96th birthday with her!

As we made our way up the ramp inside the heavy door which Grandma T INSISTED on holding for everyone, we found ourselves in a beautiful Irish Restaurant.  The walls were covered in dark wood that made it really warm and inviting.

The signs on the walls were fun to read, and they made everyone at the table giggle as we walked by.  The walls were covered in signs and little plaques.  Our favorite was right over our own table.

“Money is the root of all evil, men need roots.”

“Yes we do!” Auntie Elaine said with a chuckle.  If you remember, Auntie Elaine is Papa’s sister.  She came up from Virginia to celebrate their mom’s birthday this week.

Flat Stanley climbed up into the seat and was ready to eat!  He was hungry.  Everyone was.

We ordered an app, not the kind of app on a cell phone, but an appetizer.  It’s a small snack that comes to the table before your meal.  Only this “app” was anything but small!  It was calamari, which is a fancy name for squid and Flat Stanley wasn’t sure if he’d like to try it.  But, it was delicious!  Flat Stanley is an adventurous eater.  He likes to try new things.  Do you?

Flat Stanley ordered the seafood pie.  It was baked seafood covered in mashed cauliflower and browned just a little to make it crispy on top.  Papa ordered the same thing as Flat Stanley!

When the waitress brought the food, she told Papa it was hot, but Papa must not have heard her because he burned the roof of his mouth on the HOT Potatoes.  Poor Papa.  The ice cubes from his water helped sooth his pain.  Flat Stanley was very careful to blow on his seafood pie.

Flat Stanley caught Papa stealing some baked schrod fish from Grandma T’s plate.  He looked a little guilty.

The best part of the meal came after everyone leaned back and said they were so very full they couldn’t eat another bite.  Have you ever felt like that?

Well, there we were, leaned back in our “full to the brim” mode, when the waitress came singing “Happy Birthday to you….Happy Birthday to youuuuu.. Happy Birthday dear Moooooom,” Happy Birthday to youuuuuuu…”

Flat Stanley helped Grandma T blow her candle out.

It was a sweet afternoon, but Flat Stanley knew that it was about to get way sweeter!

Everyone that was so full and couldn’t eat another bite just seconds before suddenly grabbed a spoon and completely devoured the frozen pie made with Bailey’s ice cream.

Grandma T then opened her cards and presents.

She was happy to receive a new necklace that has three circles.  One in silver, one in gold and one in bronze.  The circles on the necklace say Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma.

Flat Stanley decided that Grandma T needed a new name.  He started calling her “Grandma GREAT!”

When the presents were opened and the cards were read, Flat Stanley looked at the creamy melted goodness at the bottom of the dessert bowl.  You know he wanted to, you know he HAD to; You know he DID!

Flat Stanley enjoyed licking the bowl clean!  It was a day of fun and giggles.  I hope this finds you giggling too!  Please subscribe if you’d like Nana to send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley adventure is posted!

Flat Stanley on the Scaffold

Flat Stanley watched the workermen working on Nana and Papa’s house all day from early in the morning until late in the afternoon.  It was a hot day today, rising over 85 degrees.

Nana brought the workermen some ice water to drink in the afternoon.  Flat Stanley asked if they needed any help, but they said they were just finishing up for the day.

After covering the entire home in a beautiful colonial cream siding, they loaded their work truck with all of the tools and off they drove to have dinner with their families.

After he watched them leave, Flat Stanley went through the house trying all of the windows.  Someone has to make sure that they all work is what he was thinking.

When he trotted around to the front of the house, he was singing his own happy song.  Do you know what song makes Flat Stanley happy?

“Bibbidi-bobbidi-BOO” from the Cinderella movie!

“Salagadoola mechicka boola bibbidi-bobbidi-boo

Put ’em together and what have you got“

Wow!  Flat Stanley was surprised to see the front of the house nearly completely covered in the pretty siding now too!

The workermen left their big scaffolding up.  They used it to get the highest peeks of the siding in place.  As he walked and dipped along the rock wall out front his eyes kept skipping back to the scaffold ladder.

You know he wanted to, you know he had to; you know he did!

He climbed the scaffolding to the very tippity top.

Nana came out to call Flat Stanley in for dinner and could hear the singing coming from way up high.

“Salagadoola mechicka boola bibbidi-bobbidi-boo

Put ’em together and what have you got“

“Flat Stanley!” Nana shouted, “what are you trying to do, hurt Nana by giving me heart palpitations?”  That’s when your heart beats really fast and it feels like it’s going to come out of your chest, you know like after you run really fast for a long time, or when you’re really scared.

Flat Stanley giggled and began working his way down the scaffolding.  He was still smiling as he ran toward Nana and chased the kitty shinzee up the walk.

I hope this finds you smiling too!

Flat Stanley Meets a New Friend

Papa made his really good scrambled eggs and ham steak for breakfast this morning.

“MmmmMmm, thank you Papa, you make the best scrambled eggs EVER!!  They’re so buttery and yummy.” Flat Stanley said as he cleared the dirty dishes from the table.

The chickens were really happy to see Flat Stanley when he went out to give them fresh water and snacks.  Nana had some fruit that was going bad, so he brought it outside and the chickens LOVED the special treats.

After his morning chores, Flat Stanley decided to go for a little walk.  He saw a big truck backed up to the house a couple of doors down so he went to check it out.  He saw “Monstrous Movers” written on the side of the truck and the two men were struggling with a large couch.  Flat Stanley offered his help to get the couch into the house.  The movers asked him to open the door for them, and he did.  He was a big help and got out of their way as they moved the couch inside.

As he was leaving, he heard fast footsteps stomping down the stairs and turned to see a young boy about his age!

“Are you moving in here?” Flat Stanley asked.

“Yes.  My nayyyme is Kyle, and we moooved heeere from Ayylabama!” Kyle replied.

Kyle had a funny way of talking.  His drawl really drawled!

“Do you want to come over and see our chickens?” Flat Stanley asked him.

Kyle’s smile grew really wide and he asked his mom.  She was busy unloading boxes and was quick to answer.

“Yeah, just make sure that you’re back before dark, ok?” She said with an equally drawly drawl.

Nana looked out of the window and was surprised to see Flat Stanley and his new friend playing king of the mountain on the rocks and climbing on the pile of trees.

The chickens were squawking pretty loud.  They obviously wanted to meet Flat Stanley’s new friend.  Flat Stanley brought Kyle over to the chicken coop and then he wanted to go inside the coop.  They did, and Kyle liked the way they came to him and let him pick them up.  The chickens had eaten all of the cantaloupe and strawberries.

“You shuuuure are a pretty little hen aren’t youuuu” Kyle said as he held Ms. Lacy, the loudest chicken of the bunch.

After spending a little time with the chickens Kyle heard a woman hollering from the porch and watched as Nana brought a soda out for them and a beach ball they had bought for Flat Stanley in Maine.

“Thank you Ma’am,” Kyle said as Nana handed him a soda.

“What nice manners you have,” Nana replied. “Did you just move here?”

“Yes, I’m Kyle McCallister and my family just moved into the house up the road.”

“Oh is that wonderful news! I’m Nana and I have this big tomato I need to use today.  I think I’ll make BLT’s, do you like BLT’s Kyle?”

Kyle shook his head yes, who doesn’t LOVE Bacon!

The tomato was really special!  It was yellow and HUGE.

After they finished a nice lunch, the boys were back outside with the beach ball. Bouncing to a tune.

“Keep it in the air, don’t let it fall, keep it in the air, come one come all.”

Tossing the ball made them tired.  They sat on the grass to rest for a bit.

Today was a fun day for both of them and as they sipped their cold sodas, they were smiling.  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe, so Nana can send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.

Have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend!
