Flat Stanley and His Anniversary Surprise

Flat Stanley stepped down the stairs a little later than usual this morning.  Nana and Papa were already making coffee and eggs in the kitchen.

“Happy Anniversary, it seems like 50 years, not 22; but I hope I’m lucky enough to enjoy many more with you.” He overheard Papa telling Nana.

Flat Stanley’s face turned a little red and he slowed his steps, kind of embarrassed to come trotting in on “the moment.”

Nana was smiling and was giving a Papa a kiss when he turned the corner at the base of the stairs.  He turned into the bathroom rather quickly.  Ew.

He could still hear them talking about all that they’ve been through with each other over the past 22 years, with the kids, grandkids, different homes and travel they enjoyed.

When he went into the living room he looked at the pictures on the walls that showed Nana and Papa when they were younger.

Later in the day, he was talking to Auntie Terri.

“So, what should we do for their anniversary?” Flat Stanley asked.

“Well cupcakes would be nice, but Papa is diabetic, so maybe flowers would be better.”

They decided they’d go look for some pretty flowers later.  While they sat in their quiet thoughts, Flat Stanley had to ask.

“Auntie Terri, why would anyone want to get married?  I’m never getting married.  Yuck.”

“Well,” Auntie Terri replied with a bit of hesitation on how to answer this one.  “There are different kinds of love.  You know how  you love Alexa and Briana as besties, and you love Nana and Papa because they are kind, loving people and me…” she said as she she squeezed his side, “When you’re older, things will look differently to you.”

Flat Stanley giggled a silly kind of bashful laugh over a conversation about love in it’s many forms.

“Can we go to the store now, Auntie Terri?” Flat Stanley asked.

They went to the store and found a nice assortment of beautiful flowers on this gorgeous spring day.  They had a hard time choosing.

“Yellow and purple grow nicely together,” Terri said. These are beautiful and Nana will enjoy planting them in the garden with you and Briana.

Flat Stanley agreed and they went home to surprise Nana and Papa.

Nana and Papa were just finishing up their dinner when Flat Stanley surprised them with a picture he drew.  He loves to draw.  It was a picture of Nana and Papa.

“Happy Anniversary” He cried out as he came in with his work of art made just for them!

Terri and Briana came over to give them hugs and Nana and Papa loved the flowers they chose, but loved their smiles most of all.

“This is love…” Flat Stanley said with a smile.

Flat Stanley Arrives Back in Massachusetts

It was a really cool drive northbound for Flat Stanley!  As they drove from Virginia to Massachusetts, Nana kept pointing out the changes from fully leafed out trees, to return to the beginning signs of springtime like the fresh buds on the trees, yellow forsythia and daffodils.  As they pulled into the driveway, Nana’s smile grew wide as she noted that her favorite bright red tulips even waited for her to return, before dropping their red blossoms!

But Everyone in the car gasped when they saw the HOUSE!  Nana and Papa’s NEW House!!  The roof will be shingled tomorrow and all of the framing is complete!

“Stop the CAR!” Flat Stanley hollered.  When Nana stopped the car, Flat Stanley jumped out and asked the worker men if they needed any help.  They put Flat Stanley to work right away working on the porch framing.

“Oh this is a perfect porch for two rocking chairs,” Nana exclaimed as she walked around her new home that is quickly taking shape.

After a hard afternoon helping the guys frame the porch, Flat Stanley went inside with Briana.  Nana and Papa were missing all the kids here in Massachusetts too!  It’s so hard to be pulled.

“We all need to live on the same street!” Nana said once again.

Flat Stanley and Nana were both as amazed as Papa when Briana and Terri indulged in a taste of Papa’s pickled eggs! Yes, PICKLED EGGS!  Papa bought them in Virginia and tried to get all of the grandloves in Virginia to try one, but they wouldn’t.  But Briana DID!!  EWWW!!  haha.. she said they weren’t her favorite, and she wouldn’t have them again, but Nana was surprised that she tried them; and that she didn’t gag!

It made Nana and Papa and Auntie Terri laugh, and then Auntie Terri tried a taste!  I don’t think she’ll be doing that again either.  haha!  Papa gets to enjoy the rest of the jar all by himself!

He was smiling…

I hope this finds you smiling too!

Flat Stanley is Missing Briana and Auntie Terri

As Flat Stanley and Alexa were eating their cheesy eggs that Nana made, Flat Stanley’s mind began to wander.

He was thinking about all of the fun he’s had this week with Alexa, Jake, Jaida and all of the cousins, but at the same time had a nagging tinge of sadness.  He was missing Briana and Auntie Terri.

He knew he wasn’t alone in these feelings.  Alexa is having fun with Nana and Papa here, and loves the adventures with Flat Stanley; but she also misses her mommy and daddy who are on vacation.

Auntie Shana, Alexa’s mom and Don, her dad are enjoying an anniversary trip in paradise island; but Flat Stanley could even hear a tinge of sadness in their voices when they called home to check on everyone.

So Flat Stanley didn’t feel alone in his mixed emotions of overwhelming joy and excitement, and missing someone.

Auntie Shana recorded a fun good night video where she sings her special “good night sweetheart” song to Alexa.  Nana plays it for her at bedtime and although she smiles while she does the “tickle tickle” part back to her mom in the recording, Flat Stanley could see the sadness behind her eyes.

Flat Stanley’s happy heart strings are super excited about spending such a fun time on adventures with Alexa, but at the same time those other heart strings are pulled because it’s hard when you’re missing those you love. I wish we could all live on the same street!

It was nice to hear Auntie Terri’s voice when she called, but the pictures Briana sent, made Flat Stanley really miss home.

Briana was playing in the basement of the barn.  Briana likes to bring her friends to the creepiest places, but her friend Claudia didn’t seem to mind. She found a caterpillar!

And they finally have springtime in Massachusetts!  Look at those spring smiles in front of Nana’s forsythia bush!

And Flat Stanley loved the picture of Claudia holding Penelope the chicken!

Their BBQ looked fun too!  Flat Stanley can eat three hot dogs!  He likes his with extra extra ketsup, which usually makes a big mess, but that’s what outside BBQs are made for!

That and lots of laughter!

“You know what keeps me happy Flat Stanley?” Nana asked.  “I focus on the good heart strings, the ones that make me laugh out loud.  Like a chicken dance in my chicken pants, and the laughter of my grandloves!”

“Another thing that helps us through a sad moment is to think about tomorrow and something you have to look forward to.”

“Yes, Flat Stanley!” Alexa exclaimed. “Think about all of the hugs and kisses and tickles to come when we’re all reunited again!”

Alexa was smiling as she went on to cheer Flat Stanley up by mentioning the Cinco De Mayo party this weekend! On THE day her Mom and Dad return!  Something to look forward to brought a smile to all of our faces.

Flat Stanley enjoys May Day!

The first of May is a very special holiday!

“Flat Stanley, today we get to celebrate May Day with Alexa!” Nana exclaimed, showing her holiday excitement.

We started off by gathering a nice bunch of flowers for Alexa to take to school and give to her first grade teacher, Mrs. Wenzel.

Mrs. Wenzel was so surprised to see Flat Stanley strutting in wearing his infamous red suspenders!

“Happy May Day,” Alexa and Flat Stanley sang out together.

May Day is a special holiday originating long ago in the Roman times, to celebrate the goddess of flowers, the changing of the seasons and warmer weather!

On May Day in England, Scotland, and other Eastern European countries, they celebrate May Day by dancing around the colorful May Pole.

“The children (and young at heart) form a circle around the pole.  Long ribbons stretch from the top of the pole, to each person in the circle.  And then they dance!” Nana explained.

Alexa and Flat Stanley loved the cake that Nana bought for their own May Day celebration.

Flat Stanley got a lot of icing on his face, he’s a very messy eater; but Alexa helped him clean up.

After cake, they used bright markers to color spring designs on the the flower pockets they were creating.  Nana helped them shape the paper into a cone and tape it together.

Then Alexa and Flat Stanley placed fresh flowers in the cones and tied a string, so the cone of flowers could hang from a doorknob.

And then the fun part!

“OK Alexa,” Flat Stanley said, “you do the first one, hang it from the neighbor’s doorknob, ring the doorbell and RUN back to us.  We’ll stay hidden behind this bush.”

Alexa was a little nervous at first, but she knew that the nice neighbor Mrs. Buford would love the surprise.

Alexa hung the beautiful bouquet in her pretty handmade cone basket on the doorknob.

She could hear Mrs. Buford talking to her dog inside, so she rang the doorbell and ran as fast as the wind back behind the bush, where Flat Stanley was crouching in his hiding place.

They watched as their neighbor, Mrs. Buford opened the door. Seeing nobody there, she looked a bit dismayed.  But then she saw it!  She saw the beautiful bouquet left secretively for her.  She looked up and down the sidewalk wondering who left these fresh flowers and pretty May Day cone of flowers for her.

Success!  Alexa and Flat Stanley remained hiding as May Day is all about making people smile in secret.  They can’t find out who left the flowers, or the secret is blown!

They did have a hard time containing their giggles as they watched Mrs. Buford take her flowers inside and shut the door; she was smiling.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe and Nana will send you a smile a day!  Who doesn’t need that in today’s world!  Spread the joy!!

Flat Stanley in The Land of Wishes

Flat Stanley ran out to greet Alexa as she came down the giant stairs of the school bus with a big smile! It was a happy reunion with a lot of hugs and smiles.

When they walked up the driveway to the house together, Flat Stanley’s eyes lit up with sparkles of excitement and he  said to Alexa, “look at all those wishes in your yard!”

Flat Stanley jumped down in the middle of the wishes!  Then, you wouldn’t believe what happened, but Nana got a picture of it, so we have proof.

If you look really close, you can see the wasp that landed on his left hand.  Thankfully, it was a friendly wasp, and he didn’t sting Flat Stanley.  Thet would have hurt!

Alexa picked him up and picked the biggest wish making Dandelion from the yard.  She closed her eyes and held Flat Stanley close…and then she made her wish.

What do you think Alexa wished for?

If wishes come true, I think she wished for a fun day with Nana, Papa, Flat Stanley and the family.

Flat Stanley smiled really big for the camera as Alexa caught him climbing up the dogwood tree to smell the flowers.  Did you know that the Dogwood tree is recognized as THE Virginia state tree?

Then Alexa got her bike and fancy safety helmet from the garage.

Alexa put Flat Stanley in her bicycle pouch and rode like the wind down the little side street.  Flat Stanley started singing.

“Ride, ride like the wind…” As he felt the wind blowing through his hair.

They passed Alexa’s sister Jaida on her pogo stick.  It was a beautiful day for playing outside.

Nana was delighted to spend this afternoon in the warm Virginia springtime, outside with Flat Stanley and her grandloves.

After Alexa’s brother  Jake scared Nana with his tricks on his bicycle, Jake and Jaida continued to worry Nana with their skateboard tricks. These. Kids!

The smiles couldn’t be bigger here in Virginia!  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Thanks for subscribing and sharing Flat Stanley’s Adventures with your friends and family.

Springtime in Virginia with Flat Stanley

Flat Stanley woke up early.  He was anxious to go outside and explore the lake and yard around Auntie Elaine and Uncle Jimmy’s house.

“Come on Henry!!” Flat Stanley said to their dog and then he tried to whistle.  It wasn’t much of a whistle, but Henry caught his intention and ran by his side.

Henry ran across the grass ahead of Flat Stanley. He’d scuttle three steps ahead and then turn around to make sure Flat Stanley was following.

The water was so beautiful.

Flat Stanley went out on the dock to look for fish swimming below.  He didn’t see any fish, but two big ducks paddling their feet with a flutter, scuttled past.

He walked back up to the house and found springtime!! Nana is going to be so happy to see this!  He laid in the middle of the phlox flowers, rolling around and around, breathing in the scent of spring!

“Ahhhh springtime!!” he said as he exhaled.

He wanted to pick an Iris for Nana.  The flowers were in perfect bloom their petals blew softly in the spring breeze.  Flat Stanley decided the flowers were happier in the garden.

Uncle Jimmy lined the gardens with bowling balls!

Flat Stanley wanted to go bowling, you know he really had to; you know he did.

He picked up one of the heavy bowling balls.  He couldn’t quite lift it when he stuck his little fingers in the holes, so he got his hands underneath the heavy ball, and hefted it up. With a mighty push throw, he projected the heavy bowling ball forward on the grass.

That’s when Nana came out on the porch. She didn’t look very happy about Flat Stanley’s lawn bowling.

And then Flat Stanley’s last hefty finale came, but the ball went a little too far and went crashing against the rocks.

Flat Stanley clenched his teeth as the bowling ball careened and crashed down the rocky bed.

A loud voice screeched “SteeerrrIKE!!! From across the yard. Auntie Elaine had come out on the porch just in time to save the day.

It made Flat Stanley giggle and yes, even Nana, who stood shaking her head,  smiled and chuckled.
