Flat Stanley Helps the Window Crew

Flat Stanley enjoyed a relaxing morning at the house today.  He was hanging out with Shinzee the cat.

“Run, Shinzee, RUN!” Flat Stanley yelled as he threw her salmon treats as hard as he could out into the yard and just like a dog playing fetch, Shinzee would run to get them, and then return for more.

Shinzee was tired and all of the treats were gone.  So Flat Stanley was hanging out with her on the bench in Nana’s garden.

“A bit of rest is just what we need today, Shinzee”  It’s been a long week complete with friends, travel and warriors!

But then Flat Stanley heard the tap tap tap of the hammer going on next door and decided to go see what was going on.

“No rest for the weary!” Flat Stanley whispered as he smiled his lovely smile and rounded the big bush in front of the house.

When he saw the workermen putting windows in Nana and Papa’s new house across the drive Flat Stanley took off into a gallop run.

“Hey guys! Do you need any help today?”

“Oh we can always use the help of a strong young lad like yourself,” Wild Willy the Window Man said.

So Flat Stanley grabbed a hammer and started tap tap tapping the windows in place.  They let him run the glue gun around the edges and even frame in a window that wasn’t fitting just right.

The workermen were very nice and loved Flat Stanley’s help.

Flat Stanley worked with the level to make sure the window was situated just right so it will open and close for Nana and Papa with an easy slide.

When Wild Willy the Window Man was securing the last window in place, Flat Stanley ran inside and popped up on the other side of the glass with a surprising “Peek-a-Boo!!!” It made Wild Willy jump a bit, but he recovered quickly and shook his head at Flat Stanley.

“Haha, you got me! Now go grab that door.”

Flat Stanley got to secure Nana’s pretty front door in place.  He was very careful with the special panes of glass.

When Nana came out to see it, she had tears in her eyes.

“It’s fun to watch a house come together, but Flat Stanley, with windows and doors, the house is becoming a home!” she said.

Flat Stanley had enjoyed a busy day with the worker men.  He sat on the little porch with Nana for a few minutes and she talked about how she can’t wait for her rocking chair on this very porch.  It was an exciting day for them.  Nana couldn’t stop smiling.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Enjoy your weekend!

Flat Stanley Rides the Storm Out

As Flat Stanley layed his head down to sleep.  His pillow needed a bit of fluffing up and Nana helped adjust his sheets just so.

“Ok, Flat Stanley, we’ll rise early tomorrow, so get a good night’s sleep.” Nana said after reading a bit.  “Nana’s making bullseye eggs for breakfast tomorrow.”

Flat Stanley smiled as Nana left the room, he likes when Nana cuts the hole in the center of the bread and breaks an egg inside.  She flips it so carefully, that the yolk stays whole and runny.  Then you use the circle of toast she grills in the pan to dip in the yolk.

Sleep didn’t come quickly for Flat Stanley.  He tossed and turned a bit and the rain was beating against his window.  Usually, this is a comforting sound and it puts him right to sleep, but tonight, his mind just kept wandering to far away places.

Of course he was thinking about his friends in Virginia and he smiled recalling the dolphin ride with Mermaid Alexa.  Dreams are such a wonderful thing.  He squeezed his eyes shut tight, trying to enter a really fun dream.

But then crash boom went the thunder, and lightning bolts lit up the sky outside of his bedroom window.  Flat Stanley sat straight up in bed and said.. “Nanahhhh,” but Nana had already gone downstairs and Flat Stanley knew he should be sleeping, so he placed the pillow over his head and tried to silence the thunder.

His mind then went to fourth of July celebrations.  You know when the sky lights up in vibrant colors of red, white and blue?  Flat Stanley pretended that the crack boom bam in the sky was fireworks.

He pictured himself with Alexa and her cousins.  They were sitting on a sandy beach in a circle around a BIG Firepit.  Each of them had a straightened coat hanger with a marshmallow on the end of the stick roasting and toasting as they turned the gooey goodness over the flames.

Flat Stanley accidentally caught his marshmallow on fire, and when he blew it out, it was as black as tar.  Flat Stanley slid the burned outer crust off and ate the yummy warm marshmallow inside.

His next marshmallow was perfectly brown like toast as he carefully kept the marshmallow above the flames.

BOOOOM!!!  Came another wicked thunder clap.  Flat Stanley held his pillow tightly over his head and pictured the beautiful fireworks in the sky with Alexa beside him.  Everyone clapped and cheered in excitement.

He took a deep breath and went back to his marshmallows.  He imagined Alexa handing him a graham cracker and piece of chocolate.  Flat Stanley snapped the graham cracker in half and then placed the piece of chocolate on one half of the graham cracker and then like a sandwich, he slid his perfectly toasted marshmallow off of the stick to complete his masterpiece S’more!

Want S’mores?  I do too now!

He imagined the creamy goodness as the storm seemed to settle down ouside and he found himself falling to sleep.

In the morning, Flat Stanley trotted downstairs to the smell of fresh eggs cooking.  BULLSEYES!!  yeah!!!  Flat Stanley was smiling, Nana was smiling too.  She knows that thunderstorms can sound very loud and she was proud of Flat Stanley for riding the storm out as he described how he did it.  I hope you’re smiling too and that when the next storm comes that you ride it out as bravely as Flat Stanley.

Flat Stanley Helps Redondo the Roofer

Flat Stanley woke up to the rap tap tap of a hammer going on.  He jumped out of bed and looked out the window to see shingles going up on the roof of Nana and Papa’s new house!

He tightened his suspenders and grabbed a granola bar before flying out the door.

“Hellllloooooo” he hollared trying to be heard above the noisy compressor.  The compressor shoots air and makes the nails fly out of his nail gun with so much power it can sink through the shingle and secure it to the board below in one finger press.

“Helllooooo can I help, I’d like to work with you!” he tried again.  The roofer looked down and waved his hand to come on up.

Flat Stanley climbed aboard the special ladder that had a pully on it.  He put a few heavy boxes of shingles on the flat step and rode it up like an elevator.

“Brrrrmmmmm Brrrmmmmmm…at your service” Flat Stanley told Redondo, “Redondo the Roofer!”

Redondo handed Flat Stanley the air gun and had him try to shoot a few nails in the shingle to secure it to the roof.  These shingles will keep the rain out of Nana and Papa’s new house.

Flat Stanley noticed that it had a handle like his toy gun, Nana won’t let him play with that toy because she says she doesn’t even like people to pretend they’re hurting someone.  But this was a tool, so it was ok.

When Flat Stanley pulled the trigger, it shot him back like a rocket and he landed on the other side of the roof of the house!

“Whew, that wasn’t a good idea!” Flat Stanley said to himself.

He stood up and shook himself off, he wasn’t hurt; but decided maybe the nail gun wasn’t for him.

Redondo the Roofer asked if he could ride the pull ladder down for more shingles.

That he could do!

Flat Stanley liked riding the pully ladder up and down and brought him a lot of boxes and materials.

When they broke for lunch, Nana brought them out some egg salad sandwiches.  They were delicious!  Flat Stanley liked the crunch of the pickle relish inside.

Flat Stanley was returning from a bathroom break when he looked at the roof of the old 1700’s shed.  It had grass growing on it!

“Why don’t we use roofs like that?  They seem to last a long time.” Flat Stanley asked Papa who was working out in the garden.

“You’ve got a good point Flat Stanley,” Papa replied.  “I think that roof has been there for 300 years, since that building was built!”

It was a very old building with a very old sod roof and the shed inside is dry as a bone.

Flat Stanley shook his head and continued over to the new construction across the driveway.  He was thinking that maybe Papa was right; maybe the new ways of doing things isn’t always better.

He was shocked when he looked up and saw Redondo the Roofer on the very tippy top of the ridge of the roofline!

“Be careful there buddy,” Flat Stanley hollered.

His electrical cord that made his nail gun run from the compressor was wrapped around the ladder below and Redondo the Roofer was happy to see Flat Stanley come back.

Flat Stanley uncoiled the cord from where it was stuck and Redondo the Roofer was back to nailing fast and furious!

“Bam bitty bam bit bam,” the nail gun hammered out a tune.  Flat Stanley decided the beat needed some words, and began singing.

“Hammer Hammer Hammer on the Nails Nails Nails, as you teeter teeter teeter on the rails.  A boom shacka lacka lacka BOOOOM!”

Redondo the Roofer was shaking his head and laughing as he finished up for the day.  The shingles were all nearly laid and the sun was setting when Flat Stanley rode the pully ladder up one more time to sit and watch the sunset with Redondo.

It was a beautiful sunset, and a wonderful day.  Flat Stanley pulled a rubber ball from his pocket.  He had put a quarter in the gumball machine yesterday and this bright orange rubber ball bounced out.   Flat Stanley sat on the ridge of the roof and bounced the ball down the newly layed shingles.

It bounced and bounced and bounced and then DROPPED off the roof and did one really high bounce when it landed on the ground below.

Redondo the Roofer was smiling at Flat Stanley and his silly smile was shining back at him.  They had a good day.

I hope you had a good day and this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe and Nana will send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.  We all need a few more smiles in our days.

Flat Stanley Does the Chores

Walking out to see his favorite feathered friends, Flat Stanley had lost the spring in his step.  He was feeling pretty bad about making Nana, Papa and Auntie Terri worry so much yesterday.  His trip was fun, but he learned his lesson.

He talked to the chickens for a while, giving them their favorite treats and by the time he collected the eggs, he was feeling a little bit better.

When he came inside, Nana was making scrambled eggs with tomato and cheese.  The cheesy goodness smelled good!

“Breakfast is my favorite meal,” Nana said as she put Flat Stanley’s plate in front of him.

“And orange juice makes every breakfast even better,” Flat Stanley said as he took a sip of the citrusy sweet drink.

While eating his breakfast, Flat Stanley decided he would take care of Nana and Papa’s chores today.  This would help him feel better for worrying them so much yesterday.

He started by emptying all of the trash cans, and carrying the heavy bag to the trash barrel.  Then, he got the recycling bin and hefted it up and out to the other recycling barrel.

Flat Stanley came in and grabbed the broom from the back hall.  He swept the floors and was really careful to get around the appliances and dust from the corners.  It surprised him to see so much gunk in the dustpan, but I guess dust falls, even when you’re out of town!

The dusting was Flat Stanley’s favorite chore.  He grabbed the long pole and dusted all the corners and fixtures.

Nana was just about to stop Flat Stanley when he went for the mop, but she held back.  He was really trying to help, so she decided to let him.

That may not have been the best decision.

Flat Stanley grabbed the mop and put the pad on it kinda sideways, but it worked.  He squirted five squirts around the toilet and began working on getting the floors bright and shiny like Nana does.

But the squirts weren’t working very well.

So what do you think Flat Stanley did?

Yes, he went for the dish soap on the counter and squirted that on the floor.  Then he grabbed a bucket and filled it with water.  He didn’t mean to, but his foot slid on the slippery floor and he accidentally bumped into the bucket.  It spilled across the floor making the dishsoap suds up like it does in the sink; but this was all over the floor!

“Ohh no!” Flat Stanley shouted.  This is NOT how he planned to “help” Nana!

Nana heard his shout and forced herself to remain at her desk doing her work.  She pretty much knew what she’d find if she went in there.

Flat Stanley ran up to the linen closet and grabbed towels.  On his hands and knees he cleaned up the water and suds and rang out the towels to the best of his ability.

Papa walked by the hallway, but decided not to go in.  He was really doing what he could to let Flat Stanley be the “big boy” he decided to be yesterday.

Flat Stanley was sopping up the mess for hours.  Everytime he thought he got all of the suds up, he’d feel the sticky tackiness when he walked on it and then get his damp towels down, only to stir up more suds.  It seemed like a never ending cycle.

Eventually, it was clean!  It wasn’t sticky and it shined like Nana’s floors after she mops!  He put the dirty towels in the washing machine and started the wash.

Nana decided not to sit this one out.  She went in and ran the rinse and drain cycle a few times to get the suds off of the towels so they didn’t overflow the washing machine.

She was shaking her head, but as she looked at what a nice job Flat Stanley did on his chores, it showed how he had learned a lesson, or maybe two today.  Nana was smiling.  Flat Stanley was relieved and feeling much better by the days end.  He sighed a big sigh of relief upon seeing Nana’s smile return to her face.

I hope you’re smiling too!  Please subscribe and Nana will send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.  Thank you for sharing the smiles with your family and friends!

Flat Stanley Celebrates Cinco De Mayo!

It was a very special day for Flat Stanley and Alexa’s big family.  They all gathered at a Mexican restaurant to spend Nana and Papa’s last day in Virginia together.

Alexa was happy to show everyone the Mexican Hat Dance she learned!

Flat Stanley was a little disappointed when they didn’t follow with the Macarena, his new favorite dance.

When a big basket of tortilla chips were brought over, this brought a big smile back to his face.  He found out how much he loves the Mexican Avocado dip!  The green goop kinda looked nasty, but he loved the creamy goodness called guacamole; and it’s a fun word to say.  He kept asking Alexa’s cousin Mary Grace to “please pass the GuacaMOLeeee!!”

After they filled up on tacos and burritos, it was time for more dancing!!

Alexa and Mary Grace looked beautiful while singing with the Mariachi band with their fancy hats!

Then, Flat Stanley spotted the bucking bronco.  You know he wanted to, you know he had to, you know he did!  He brought all of the kids along for a ride with him!

A fun time was had by all.  We hope that you enjoyed a happy Cinco De Mayo!

Flat Stanley Joins the Orchestra

Flat Stanley was really looking forward to his day with Alexa’s big sister, Jaida.

He climbed up the giant steps, onto the school bus and found his seat; right in the front row, behind the bus driver.

“Come on, Flat Stanley,” Jaida said “my friends are in the back row, where the cool kids sit.”

Flat Stanley counted the rows of seats as they made their way to the very back of the bus.

“16 rows!” Flat Stanley exclaimed as he hopped up on the seat under the very back window.

Jaida introduced Flat Stanley to Cool Cody “Dominic.”  He let Flat Stanley wear his ear buds and listen to his boppin’ music.

As they cruised up to the middle school, Flat Stanley slid into Jaida’s backpack.  Flat Stanley isn’t old enough to be seen in middle school, so he had to hide.

Sometimes, between classes, Flat Stanley would poke Jaida’s back, through her backpack.  She giggled down the hallways.

At one point, Jaida took Flat Stanley out for one sneak peek at the coolest hallway in the school!

This hallway listed all the kids that worked really hard in school.

Flat Stanley also liked the shiny trophy case that highlighted the school’s top athletes.

After school, Jaida had an orchestra concert to perform in.  She plays the clarinet really well.  Flat Stanley enjoys listening to her practice, but to hear her play with a full band of instruments was going to be really fun!

Flat Stanley had the best seat in the house; in Papa’s shirt pocket.

It wasn’t long before Jaida took the stage like a rock star! Flat Stanley was clapping for her!

They sounded precise and well practiced.  Flat Stanley’s feet were tapping so hard, he almost toppled out of Papa’s pocket.

Flat Stanley was watching the conductor “Maestro,” as his arms flew through the air leading the beat. He looked at the row of clarinet players that Jaida played in perfect time with, he watched the oboe players and flute players, but he decided it was the symbols  he would play when he’s in middle school.

Or maybe he will play the BIG Tuba!

He really couldn’t decide!  But then he came across the DRUM!  He knew then that he would grow up and play the drums like Alexa and Jaida’s big brother, Jake!

Flat Stanley tracked the drummer down because he was feeling the groove through his bones! You know he wanted to, you know he had to; you know he did!

Flat Stanley found the drummer and joined the orchestra!

With a bam boom bam and a rattaty tat, he hammered out a beat, just like that!

After the show, everyone was congratulating Jaida, Flat Stanley and the band.

Papa gave Jaida a big kiss on the cheek.

Flat Stanley then got to meet Jaida’s daddy, Leo.  He was very proud of his girl.

Jaida had a wonderful night and was smiling.  We were all smiling!  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Thank you for sharing Flat Stanley’s daily adventure eBook blog with your friends and family!  We all need smiles delivered daily.

Flat Stanley is Missing Briana and Auntie Terri

As Flat Stanley and Alexa were eating their cheesy eggs that Nana made, Flat Stanley’s mind began to wander.

He was thinking about all of the fun he’s had this week with Alexa, Jake, Jaida and all of the cousins, but at the same time had a nagging tinge of sadness.  He was missing Briana and Auntie Terri.

He knew he wasn’t alone in these feelings.  Alexa is having fun with Nana and Papa here, and loves the adventures with Flat Stanley; but she also misses her mommy and daddy who are on vacation.

Auntie Shana, Alexa’s mom and Don, her dad are enjoying an anniversary trip in paradise island; but Flat Stanley could even hear a tinge of sadness in their voices when they called home to check on everyone.

So Flat Stanley didn’t feel alone in his mixed emotions of overwhelming joy and excitement, and missing someone.

Auntie Shana recorded a fun good night video where she sings her special “good night sweetheart” song to Alexa.  Nana plays it for her at bedtime and although she smiles while she does the “tickle tickle” part back to her mom in the recording, Flat Stanley could see the sadness behind her eyes.

Flat Stanley’s happy heart strings are super excited about spending such a fun time on adventures with Alexa, but at the same time those other heart strings are pulled because it’s hard when you’re missing those you love. I wish we could all live on the same street!

It was nice to hear Auntie Terri’s voice when she called, but the pictures Briana sent, made Flat Stanley really miss home.

Briana was playing in the basement of the barn.  Briana likes to bring her friends to the creepiest places, but her friend Claudia didn’t seem to mind. She found a caterpillar!

And they finally have springtime in Massachusetts!  Look at those spring smiles in front of Nana’s forsythia bush!

And Flat Stanley loved the picture of Claudia holding Penelope the chicken!

Their BBQ looked fun too!  Flat Stanley can eat three hot dogs!  He likes his with extra extra ketsup, which usually makes a big mess, but that’s what outside BBQs are made for!

That and lots of laughter!

“You know what keeps me happy Flat Stanley?” Nana asked.  “I focus on the good heart strings, the ones that make me laugh out loud.  Like a chicken dance in my chicken pants, and the laughter of my grandloves!”

“Another thing that helps us through a sad moment is to think about tomorrow and something you have to look forward to.”

“Yes, Flat Stanley!” Alexa exclaimed. “Think about all of the hugs and kisses and tickles to come when we’re all reunited again!”

Alexa was smiling as she went on to cheer Flat Stanley up by mentioning the Cinco De Mayo party this weekend! On THE day her Mom and Dad return!  Something to look forward to brought a smile to all of our faces.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe and Nana will send you a daily smile!

Flat Stanley enjoys May Day!

The first of May is a very special holiday!

“Flat Stanley, today we get to celebrate May Day with Alexa!” Nana exclaimed, showing her holiday excitement.

We started off by gathering a nice bunch of flowers for Alexa to take to school and give to her first grade teacher, Mrs. Wenzel.

Mrs. Wenzel was so surprised to see Flat Stanley strutting in wearing his infamous red suspenders!

“Happy May Day,” Alexa and Flat Stanley sang out together.

May Day is a special holiday originating long ago in the Roman times, to celebrate the goddess of flowers, the changing of the seasons and warmer weather!

On May Day in England, Scotland, and other Eastern European countries, they celebrate May Day by dancing around the colorful May Pole.

“The children (and young at heart) form a circle around the pole.  Long ribbons stretch from the top of the pole, to each person in the circle.  And then they dance!” Nana explained.

Alexa and Flat Stanley loved the cake that Nana bought for their own May Day celebration.

Flat Stanley got a lot of icing on his face, he’s a very messy eater; but Alexa helped him clean up.

After cake, they used bright markers to color spring designs on the the flower pockets they were creating.  Nana helped them shape the paper into a cone and tape it together.

Then Alexa and Flat Stanley placed fresh flowers in the cones and tied a string, so the cone of flowers could hang from a doorknob.

And then the fun part!

“OK Alexa,” Flat Stanley said, “you do the first one, hang it from the neighbor’s doorknob, ring the doorbell and RUN back to us.  We’ll stay hidden behind this bush.”

Alexa was a little nervous at first, but she knew that the nice neighbor Mrs. Buford would love the surprise.

Alexa hung the beautiful bouquet in her pretty handmade cone basket on the doorknob.

She could hear Mrs. Buford talking to her dog inside, so she rang the doorbell and ran as fast as the wind back behind the bush, where Flat Stanley was crouching in his hiding place.

They watched as their neighbor, Mrs. Buford opened the door. Seeing nobody there, she looked a bit dismayed.  But then she saw it!  She saw the beautiful bouquet left secretively for her.  She looked up and down the sidewalk wondering who left these fresh flowers and pretty May Day cone of flowers for her.

Success!  Alexa and Flat Stanley remained hiding as May Day is all about making people smile in secret.  They can’t find out who left the flowers, or the secret is blown!

They did have a hard time containing their giggles as they watched Mrs. Buford take her flowers inside and shut the door; she was smiling.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe and Nana will send you a smile a day!  Who doesn’t need that in today’s world!  Spread the joy!!

Flat Stanley in The Land of Wishes

Flat Stanley ran out to greet Alexa as she came down the giant stairs of the school bus with a big smile! It was a happy reunion with a lot of hugs and smiles.

When they walked up the driveway to the house together, Flat Stanley’s eyes lit up with sparkles of excitement and he  said to Alexa, “look at all those wishes in your yard!”

Flat Stanley jumped down in the middle of the wishes!  Then, you wouldn’t believe what happened, but Nana got a picture of it, so we have proof.

If you look really close, you can see the wasp that landed on his left hand.  Thankfully, it was a friendly wasp, and he didn’t sting Flat Stanley.  Thet would have hurt!

Alexa picked him up and picked the biggest wish making Dandelion from the yard.  She closed her eyes and held Flat Stanley close…and then she made her wish.

What do you think Alexa wished for?

If wishes come true, I think she wished for a fun day with Nana, Papa, Flat Stanley and the family.

Flat Stanley smiled really big for the camera as Alexa caught him climbing up the dogwood tree to smell the flowers.  Did you know that the Dogwood tree is recognized as THE Virginia state tree?

Then Alexa got her bike and fancy safety helmet from the garage.

Alexa put Flat Stanley in her bicycle pouch and rode like the wind down the little side street.  Flat Stanley started singing.

“Ride, ride like the wind…” As he felt the wind blowing through his hair.

They passed Alexa’s sister Jaida on her pogo stick.  It was a beautiful day for playing outside.

Nana was delighted to spend this afternoon in the warm Virginia springtime, outside with Flat Stanley and her grandloves.

After Alexa’s brother  Jake scared Nana with his tricks on his bicycle, Jake and Jaida continued to worry Nana with their skateboard tricks. These. Kids!

The smiles couldn’t be bigger here in Virginia!  I hope this finds you smiling too!  Thanks for subscribing and sharing Flat Stanley’s Adventures with your friends and family.

Flat Stanley at Play with the Pets

Auntie Elaine and Uncle Jimmy have a lot of pets.  None of the pets make breakfast for them, but Flat Stanley had fun playing with them during their visit.

Henry the dog has a favorite stuffed toy.  His name is “Rocky the Racoon.”

Flat Stanley was sitting on the couch and Henry came running up with “Rocky” dangling from his little mouth.  He dropped the stuffed toy at Flat Stanley’s feet.

Then Henry waited a bit less than patiently for Flat Stanley to toss the toy, again and again.

This wore Henry out!  Henry needed a nap!

Papa and Auntie Elaine were laughing with Nana when Riley, their cat, curled up INSIDE Papa’s slippers!  He was too big to fit all of the way inside, but it was funny to watch him try!

It seemed to be nap time for all of the pets.  Uncle Jimmy and Papa then decided to join in on the Sleepytime Festival and went into Dreamland too.

Penny the cat wasn’t sleeping, but she wasn’t much fun either.  She turned away when Flat Stanley threw Rocky the Racoon.  She was not amused.

And then the fish didn’t want to play with Flat Stanley either.

Flat Stanley is good at finding his own fun as you know and this day was no exception!  He went for a little walk outside and found himself in the middle of a pink flamingo oasis!

Yehaadoodledeeeeee!!!! Flat Stanley hollered as he rode the wild beasts.  Yippeeekayayyyyyy up up and away!!

Flat Stanley has an imagination dreams are made of.  It keeps him smiling.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Please subscribe and thank you for sharing Flat Stanley’s Adventures with your friends and family.
