Flat Stanley Pumps Gas!

Flat Stanley and Nana entered the shopping center and Nana noticed her gas tank was getting low.

“Tomorrow we go to Boston, so we’d better gas up a bit here Flat Stanley,” Nana stated as she pulled up to the pump.

“I’ll help you Nana,” Flat Stanley said as he unstrapped his seatbelt and jumped out to help.

Flat Stanley was a big help and topped the tank off nicely.

“Can I clean your windows for you ma’am?” Flat Stanley chided in a joking way, but Nana took him up on the task and let him wash her windshield.

Flat Stanley dunked the squeegee sponge into the soapy water and washed all of the spring bugs that didn’t move out of Nana’s way, off of the windshield.  There were a lot of bugs!  When it was shiny clean, Flat Stanley got back in the car and they were off for more errands.

They picked up Papa’s mom, yes; Grandma T was treating us all to lunch today for an anniversary treat!  What a beautiful day.

This was followed by more card stores and shopping and then more shopping.  Flat Stanley loves how spry and lively Grandma T can hop and shuffle through the isles.

Flat Stanley didn’t have to hop and shuffle.  He found a driving cart and hopped on it!

Flat Stanley is quite the driver.  He was zoom zoom zooming around the store.

Flat Stanley got really excited in the bakery section.  He rode ahead and hid in the cupcakes.  When Nana walked past he did this “PPPSSSTTTTTTT…psssst.. hey… you know you want it…” sing song that made Nana laugh, but she shook her head and said no.

“But they have SPRINKLES!” Flat Stanley continued.

Nana really really wanted to, but she is trying to eat less sweets, so although she wanted to, although she had to, she didn’t.  She stayed strong.

Instead, she found the fruits and veggies and stocked up on fresh strawberries.  These are Papa’s favorite, so she smiled as she put them in her cart for him.

Flat Stanley loved the brightly colored sweet bell peppers and Nana was quick to say “YES!” to these.

When they entered the dairy section, Grandma T found some jalapeno cheese sticks and snuck them in her basket for Nana and Papa.  She knows how they love spicy treats.  It was very nice of her, and although Nana saw her do it and KNEW who they were for, she didn’t stop her, she just smiled a big smile as she raised her eyebrows in welcomed surprise.

Nana put a carton of what looked like milk in the cart, but when Flat Stanley looked closer he saw it said Almond Milk.

“How do they milk an almond,” Flat Stanley asked Nana.  She just laughed and laughed.  It’s been a great week of laughter for Nana.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  How do they milk an almond? .. still giggling.

Enjoy your day!!

Flat Stanley Helps the Window Crew

Flat Stanley enjoyed a relaxing morning at the house today.  He was hanging out with Shinzee the cat.

“Run, Shinzee, RUN!” Flat Stanley yelled as he threw her salmon treats as hard as he could out into the yard and just like a dog playing fetch, Shinzee would run to get them, and then return for more.

Shinzee was tired and all of the treats were gone.  So Flat Stanley was hanging out with her on the bench in Nana’s garden.

“A bit of rest is just what we need today, Shinzee”  It’s been a long week complete with friends, travel and warriors!

But then Flat Stanley heard the tap tap tap of the hammer going on next door and decided to go see what was going on.

“No rest for the weary!” Flat Stanley whispered as he smiled his lovely smile and rounded the big bush in front of the house.

When he saw the workermen putting windows in Nana and Papa’s new house across the drive Flat Stanley took off into a gallop run.

“Hey guys! Do you need any help today?”

“Oh we can always use the help of a strong young lad like yourself,” Wild Willy the Window Man said.

So Flat Stanley grabbed a hammer and started tap tap tapping the windows in place.  They let him run the glue gun around the edges and even frame in a window that wasn’t fitting just right.

The workermen were very nice and loved Flat Stanley’s help.

Flat Stanley worked with the level to make sure the window was situated just right so it will open and close for Nana and Papa with an easy slide.

When Wild Willy the Window Man was securing the last window in place, Flat Stanley ran inside and popped up on the other side of the glass with a surprising “Peek-a-Boo!!!” It made Wild Willy jump a bit, but he recovered quickly and shook his head at Flat Stanley.

“Haha, you got me! Now go grab that door.”

Flat Stanley got to secure Nana’s pretty front door in place.  He was very careful with the special panes of glass.

When Nana came out to see it, she had tears in her eyes.

“It’s fun to watch a house come together, but Flat Stanley, with windows and doors, the house is becoming a home!” she said.

Flat Stanley had enjoyed a busy day with the worker men.  He sat on the little porch with Nana for a few minutes and she talked about how she can’t wait for her rocking chair on this very porch.  It was an exciting day for them.  Nana couldn’t stop smiling.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  Enjoy your weekend!

Flat Stanley Goes to Cuba

I’m sure Flat Stanley has already been to Cuba. Did you know that Flat Stanley has been to 88 countries?  He’s a well traveled boy.  Today, Flat Stanley didn’t really go to Cuba, but we were all invited to a Cuban restaurant in Worcester, MA called Cafe Reyes.

Shinae and Chris came to pick Nana and Papa up.  They loved walking through Nana and Papa’s new house.

“Seeing the designs we helped you with on paper is one thing, but walking through the house as it’s coming to life is way cool!” Shinae said.  The ‘butler’s pantry’ was Shinae’s idea and her favorite part of the house too!

After the grand tour, Chris helped Nana, Shinae and Flat Stanley out of the newly framed  house. The stairs were taken away and it was quite a leap.

“Shaaaazaaahhhhm” Flat Stanley shouted as he flew from the edge of the doorway.  He flew like the wind down to the gravel where the concrete will be poured on the garage floor next week.

Shinae ran ahead of everyone and found her place on top of the heap of rocks and hollered, “I’m the Queen of the Mountain!!”

They all piled in Chris’ car and off they went to little Cuba!  Nana still had a few fingernails left when they arrived at the restaurant.  She’s a terrible back seat driver!

As they entered the restaurant, Chris and Flat Stanley were enjoying the vibrant artwork painted on the walls.

Then, Flat Stanley spotted the musical instruments that were just his size.  You know he wanted to, you know he had to, you know he DID!!  Flat Stanley climbed up to serenade the crowd of diners in the restaurant.

“Babalu Baby!!” Flat Stanley sung like Ricky Ricardo in the ‘I Love Lucy Show’ “Babaluuuuuu, for youuuuuuu!!”

Nana shook her head and helped Flat Stanley down before finding the perfect seat just below this great picture of a hen with lots of eggs.

The empenadas were so good Nana had to get a few to go, so she could share them with Auntie Terri and Briana.

Cafe Reyes helps young men and women in transition with housing and job development skills.  The food, the concept and the staff will definitely have us all coming back for more, and sharing this great treasure with others.  If you’re ever in Central Massachusetts, this place is worth a visit!

Flat Stanley had a huge smile on his face as we were leaving, he too wants to return, and SOON!  I hope this finds you smiling and that you enjoy a wonderful weekend!  Thank you for subscribing so Nana can send you a note when a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.

Flat Stanley Rides the Storm Out

As Flat Stanley layed his head down to sleep.  His pillow needed a bit of fluffing up and Nana helped adjust his sheets just so.

“Ok, Flat Stanley, we’ll rise early tomorrow, so get a good night’s sleep.” Nana said after reading a bit.  “Nana’s making bullseye eggs for breakfast tomorrow.”

Flat Stanley smiled as Nana left the room, he likes when Nana cuts the hole in the center of the bread and breaks an egg inside.  She flips it so carefully, that the yolk stays whole and runny.  Then you use the circle of toast she grills in the pan to dip in the yolk.

Sleep didn’t come quickly for Flat Stanley.  He tossed and turned a bit and the rain was beating against his window.  Usually, this is a comforting sound and it puts him right to sleep, but tonight, his mind just kept wandering to far away places.

Of course he was thinking about his friends in Virginia and he smiled recalling the dolphin ride with Mermaid Alexa.  Dreams are such a wonderful thing.  He squeezed his eyes shut tight, trying to enter a really fun dream.

But then crash boom went the thunder, and lightning bolts lit up the sky outside of his bedroom window.  Flat Stanley sat straight up in bed and said.. “Nanahhhh,” but Nana had already gone downstairs and Flat Stanley knew he should be sleeping, so he placed the pillow over his head and tried to silence the thunder.

His mind then went to fourth of July celebrations.  You know when the sky lights up in vibrant colors of red, white and blue?  Flat Stanley pretended that the crack boom bam in the sky was fireworks.

He pictured himself with Alexa and her cousins.  They were sitting on a sandy beach in a circle around a BIG Firepit.  Each of them had a straightened coat hanger with a marshmallow on the end of the stick roasting and toasting as they turned the gooey goodness over the flames.

Flat Stanley accidentally caught his marshmallow on fire, and when he blew it out, it was as black as tar.  Flat Stanley slid the burned outer crust off and ate the yummy warm marshmallow inside.

His next marshmallow was perfectly brown like toast as he carefully kept the marshmallow above the flames.

BOOOOM!!!  Came another wicked thunder clap.  Flat Stanley held his pillow tightly over his head and pictured the beautiful fireworks in the sky with Alexa beside him.  Everyone clapped and cheered in excitement.

He took a deep breath and went back to his marshmallows.  He imagined Alexa handing him a graham cracker and piece of chocolate.  Flat Stanley snapped the graham cracker in half and then placed the piece of chocolate on one half of the graham cracker and then like a sandwich, he slid his perfectly toasted marshmallow off of the stick to complete his masterpiece S’more!

Want S’mores?  I do too now!

He imagined the creamy goodness as the storm seemed to settle down ouside and he found himself falling to sleep.

In the morning, Flat Stanley trotted downstairs to the smell of fresh eggs cooking.  BULLSEYES!!  yeah!!!  Flat Stanley was smiling, Nana was smiling too.  She knows that thunderstorms can sound very loud and she was proud of Flat Stanley for riding the storm out as he described how he did it.  I hope you’re smiling too and that when the next storm comes that you ride it out as bravely as Flat Stanley.

Thank you for subscribing, so Nana can send you a free smile to your email box every day!

Happy Mother’s Day from Flat Stanley

Flat Stanley would like to wish all the mama’s, and those that care for the loves in their lives a big Happy Mother’s Day!

“Here’s a big cup of your favorite blueberry coffee with toast and pretty smelling lilac flowers that Briana picked for you!” Flat Stanley said with love in his voice and a bright smile on his face.

A big Happy Mother’s Day to all the ladies out there with little loves in their care!

Auntie Terri came into the room singing “Happy Mother’s Day to youuuuu…” to Nana, and then Nana joined in, singing the same tune back to her.  “Happy Mother’s Day to Youuuuu…” they were singing and laughing together in the tune of the happy birthday song.

They made Flat Stanley smile as they hugged good wishes.

Nana was thinking about her own mom on this special day.

“Look at this picture of Nana as a little girl with my own mom,” Nana said.  Flat Stanley’s mouth opened wide.  It was hard to imagine Nana as a little girl in her mother’s arms.  But he recognized her smile right away.

Flat Stanley was happy when he heard Nana and Papa saying that we were all going out to lunch with GrandmaT, Auntie Terri and Briana!

When we pulled up to a bakery, Flat Stanley’s belly growled really loud and it made everyone in the car laugh!

We stepped inside the bakery and the smell of fresh cookies greeted you!  Yum!!  Nana let Flat Stanley know that he could pick out a treat, but first he had lunch to eat.  He and Briana both chose bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches.  It was stacked so high, Flat Stanley could hardly get his mouth to stretch that wide!  But he did.  He ate every bite and then had a pastry!  It was filled with his favorite lemon filling.

Flat Stanley offered to take our picture as we stepped out of the car to give Mother’s day hugs to GrandmaT.  He got pictures of all the ladies.  Flat Stanley and Briana were really enjoying this day to celebrate the ladies in their life.

When we got home, Briana set the camera up in Nana’s living room and sat her mom in Nana’s big easy chair.  Auntie Terri wasn’t feeling well, but she smiled really big when Briana surprised her with concert tickets to see one of her favorite musicians, Chris Brown; LIVE in July!

Auntie Terri was so happy and filled with love for her daughter that had worked so hard to save up every dollar earned for months, in an effort to give her mom a Happy Mother’s Day gift.

GrandmaT kept putting her rolled up newspaper over her face because she thought Flat Stanley was holding the camera too close.  Nana quickly moved the newspaper away from her face, and Flat Stanley caught her beautiful smile!

Everyone was smiling and feeling the love!  I hope this finds you smiling too and a BIG Happy Mother’s Day!  **Don’t forget to make plans to visit if you’re missing your mom or grandma, you know they’re missing you too!**

Wild Morning for Flat Stanley

Flat Stanley had a pretty wild morning today.  Nana and Papa were still upstairs, but Flat Stanley heard the working crew building next door, so he went out to see if they needed any help.

Boy did they!  They had all the wooden pieces they call “forms” up where the basement of Nana and Papa’s new home will be.  Then they had not just one but TWO cement trucks pouring cement into the “forms” to create the concrete basement walls.

The concrete crew is very nice. They were thankful to have Flat Stanley’s help.  But after some very tiring labor, Flat Stanley was ready for some fun!  You know how Flat Stanley loves to have fun.

There were a lot of slanted boards placed here and there to hold the “forms” in place.  Flat Stanley liked to use them as slides.  Then the workermen would help him back up to the top of the wall and dowwwwwn he’d slide again.

After the concrete set up and dried.  Flat Stanley helped the crew remove the “forms” and there all by itself stood the walls for Nana and Papa’s new basement.  VIOLA!!

They had all the tools loaded and were washing down the concrete slide, er, I mean ramp.  Uncle Jimmy used to do this work and said that the ramp can get REALLY heavy to clean and disassemble if you don’t get to it quick enough and the concrete starts to harden.

But the man Flat Stanley just referred to as “Santa” let Flat Stanley help him get it taken apart and loaded on the big truck.

But then we had a problem.  With all of the rain we’ve been having in Massachusetts, the big truck all loaded down with the supplies, got stuck!  It was stuck across the driveway!

“Flat Stanley to the Rescuuuuue” he shouted as he ran over to help get the truck out of the muddy muck.

He huffed, puffed and pushed, but, the truck was too big for him to push.  The truck was sitting diagonally across the driveway when ANOTHER truck came to fill Nana and Papa’s oil tank.  Oh is this a crazy day!  Thankfully, there’s another driveway on the other side of the yard, so Flat Stanley ran over to guide the oil truck driver in.

A lot of homes use oil to heat their homes in Massachusetts.  This man helps keep people warm in the winter…and this year, warm in the springtime.  Do you see that snow on the ground?!  Yes, it IS snowing on April 19th!

After the oil was filled, Flat Stanley went back to help the driver of the big equipment truck out of the mud.  He layed some of the diagonal boards under the tires to give them traction and OFF they went to the next job!

Flat Stanley saved the day!  He was excited to run inside and tell Nana and Papa all about his morning adventures.  Nana and Papa were smiling at the retelling of his huffing and puffing to get the truck out of the muck.

I hope this finds you smiling too!  If so, please subscribe, so Nana can send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted!

Flat Stanley Drives the Crane

The morning started out about as well as the week had been going for Flat Stanley and Nana, not well.

Flat Stanley and Nana went out together to collect the eggs from the chicken coop and give them food and water.

In Massachusetts, it’s been raining for days and the ground was very soft.  The rains did a number on the mountains of dirt around the chicken coop.  When Flat Stanley hit a mound of soft dirt, he felt his feet sinking and then felt his wet ankles.

I pulled Flat Stanley from the depths of the mud.

But while I was getting Flat Stanley out of the mud, I began to sink.  My shoes were completely buried and it was rising up around my own ankles.  When I tried to pull my foot out of the muddy gunk, the muddy gunk took my shoe!  My muddy sock covered foot tried to find the opening of the shoe through the gunky mud.

Gross, but I finally found my shoe, and forced my muddy sock inside.  I was struggling to pull my shoed foot out of the mud sucking muck!

Flat Stanley heard the big truck coming to the rescue!  A CRANE!  Flat Stanley began shouting, “Help, Nana needs help over here!”

The crane operator jumped down and helped Nana out of the mucky mud without the big machinery.  Nana’s face turned a little red in embarrassment, and thanked the kind workerman.

After gathering the eggs, and providing the food and water to the chickens, (thankfully, I didn’t spill all of the water while sinking in the mud); I made my muddy way back to the house and removed my shoes outside.

I made my way upstairs to change…this was not a good start to my morning.

Flat Stanley was feeling much better!  His lip is healing nicely after his fall yesterday, and he loves all the applesauce and ice cream treats that Papa sneaks to him, to help him feel better.

He ran back out, steering clear of the muddy hills; to see the workermen.

Today they were putting up the frames for the basement walls.  The big strong workermen carried the big boards down into the muddy pit that will one day be Nana and Papa’s new house, and made frames for cement walls.

The crane helped to stand everything up straight.  Flat Stanley ran to the big crane driver, thinking up a silly name on his way. “Hey, Trucker Travis, can I have a ride?”

“Trucker Travis” got a big smile on his face.  Flat Stanley brings a smile to everyone’s face!  He hefted Flat Stanley up into the cab and then backed the big crane up closer to the building worksite.

“BEEEP, BBBBEEEEEEEPP, BBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEP,” Flat Stanley chimed in with the sound of the truck backing up.

Flat Stanley was shaking as “Trucker Travis” jumped out of the super high cab of the truck.  “Thank you, Thank you so so very much!” Flat Stanley said.  He was having a MUCH better day now!

And then, yes then, things got even BETTER!

Foreman Frank came over, you remember Foreman Frank, the one with the strong toolbelt?  Well he asked Flat Stanley if he wanted to climb up to the deck of the ACTUAL Crane with him!

“Me? Way up there?” Flat Stanley exclaimed with excitement laden with a bit of fear.

Would you go up there?

Excitement won out and Foreman Frank led him safely up Onto the BIG Crane platform!

He was up so high in the sky!  Do you see the telephone wires behind him? Yeah, he was THAT high!

He looked down on Nana and Papa’s new house from way up high and shouted at the workermen below.  “Hi Guys, Look at me!  Hi Guys!!!”

“Groovy Greg” was working today and looked up at Flat Stanley waving back.  With the sound of the big truck Flat Stanley couldn’t hear him shout, “You look cool up there dude!!”

It didn’t matter what was being said, Flat Stanley was grinning from ear to ear and it wasn’t hurting his lip at ALL!

Flat Stanley Learns Shadow Dancing

Nana went out to feed the chickens this morning and had to wear her heavy coat.  The chickens were squawking like loud hawks, rather than chickens.

“I KNOW,” Nana shouted back, “it IS supposed to be spring!” In Massachusetts, it’s mid April and temperatures are still below freezing at night!

Nana let Flat Stanley throw the chicken’s favorite treats into the coop and thanked him for a wonderful job on cleaning the coop yesterday.  He’s quite the little helper.

Nana’s granddaughter, Briana invited her friend Jianna over for another sleepover.  They came next door to visit with Nana and Flat Stanley.  When Jianna spotted Papa’s drumset, she was itching to play.

“Can I, can I please?” she asked Nana in her sweet little voice with her feet dancing beneath her in a jumping beat.

“Of course you can, just be careful not to topple anything and I’ll bet Flat Stanley would LOVE a lesson!”

“So let the drumming begin!” Flat Stanley shouted. “Booom Batcha Booom Booooom…,” he was hyped!

I don’t know if it was a drumming lesson, but it was FUN!  Jianna loved the sounds that came through her headphones.

“Can you hear us Nana?” She’s shouted, because she couldn’t hear how loud she was speaking with her headphones on.

“NO,” Nana shouted back just as loudly, not sure if she could hear through the headphones she was wearing.

The beats went on .. and on, and on.  Booom BBaba Boooooom tap tap tap, Boooom!!

Flat Stanley then saw the guitar and wanted to join in with a riff to compliment the drumbeat!

“Twank shilang a bang bang…” wonderful music filled the house.  Papa came in singing “Papa was a rollin’ stone…” in his low voice that made everyone laugh.

After the music “lessons,” it was time for some dancing!

“Flat Stanley have you ever danced with your shadow?” Jianna asked him.

“How do you dance with a shadow?” Flat Stanley asked with his little nose crinkled in disbelief.

“Come on I’ll show you!”

And she did!

With the light behind them, Briana, Jianna and Flat Stanley danced with their shadows.

“Everybody Dance Now!!” Flat Stanley sang in his high pitched wail.  They danced and sang together until they were exhausted and hungry!

Nana has a special snack drawer.  You’re only allowed ONE treat a day, but it’s fun to choose.

Brianna and Jianna both selected chips.  What do you think Flat Stanley selected?  Yes!  You know it was the M&M’s!  The sweet taste brings a big smile to his face.

What would you choose?

I hope Flat Stanley made you smile today!  Please subscribe, so that Nana can send a smile to your email box everyday!  Who could say no to free smile delivered daily?  Thank you for telling your friends about Flat Stanley’s Adventures!  Have a wonderful day.

Flat Stanley and the Chickens

Nana and Papa slept in later than normal this morning.  Flat Stanley got up early and went out to check on the chickens.  They’ve been doing fairly well with all of the big construction trucks and earth moving around their coop.  Flat Stanley wanted to give them some special treats and top off their water, but while doing so, he noticed smells coming from the coop, and they were pretty bad.

When Nana got up, Flat Stanley asked if he could let the chickens run free so that he could clean the coop for her.  Well this was music to Nana’s ears!

“Yes, Flat Stanley, I think the chickens will enjoy roaming free today.” I replied.  I went to bed with music ringing in my ears from a concert and now I wake up to the sweet sound of kindness? Life is good!

The chickens enjoy the special hay that Nana puts in the chicken’s nesting boxes.  It’s softer for them to snuggle in and lay their eggs.  The stuff on the ground level of the coop is more scratchy; but that’s what they do most of the time, scratch the ground looking for bugs and treats.

Today the chickens were roaming free and decided to dig in under a bush for a nice dust bath.  Did you know chicken’s bathe in dirt?  They fluff up their feathers and the dust takes any mites away.  It’s nature’s way…

When Nana came out to check on things, one chicken tried untying her shoelace!  Her name is Cagney, you can tell by her very red mane around her neck area.

After cleaning the coop, Flat Stanley decided to go ROCK CLIMBING!

The rocks are really stacking up from the big crater they’re digging for Nana and Papa’s new house!  Flat Stanley ever so carefully climbed to the VERY top and sang to the chickens running around below him.

“I’m on the top of the world, looking down on creation, and the only explaination, I can find…”

On his walk through the woods behind the house, Flat Stanley found more signs of spring returning to Massachusetts!  When he brought one of these pretty flowers to Nana, she told him they were purple periwinkles, and she winked at him.

He winked back with his two eyed wink, he hasn’t mastered the wink with just one eye thingy, but he tries.

Can you wink with just one eye?

Nana just winked back at you!

I hope Flat Stanley made you smile today!  If so, please subscribe, so Nana can send you an email whenever she posts a new Flat Stanley Adventure.  Today, Nana posted a video of the chickens giving themselves a dustbath.  You may wish to follow Flat Stanley’s Blog on Facebook too.  Keep smiling!
