Flat Stanley Does the Chores

Walking out to see his favorite feathered friends, Flat Stanley had lost the spring in his step.  He was feeling pretty bad about making Nana, Papa and Auntie Terri worry so much yesterday.  His trip was fun, but he learned his lesson.

He talked to the chickens for a while, giving them their favorite treats and by the time he collected the eggs, he was feeling a little bit better.

When he came inside, Nana was making scrambled eggs with tomato and cheese.  The cheesy goodness smelled good!

“Breakfast is my favorite meal,” Nana said as she put Flat Stanley’s plate in front of him.

“And orange juice makes every breakfast even better,” Flat Stanley said as he took a sip of the citrusy sweet drink.

While eating his breakfast, Flat Stanley decided he would take care of Nana and Papa’s chores today.  This would help him feel better for worrying them so much yesterday.

He started by emptying all of the trash cans, and carrying the heavy bag to the trash barrel.  Then, he got the recycling bin and hefted it up and out to the other recycling barrel.

Flat Stanley came in and grabbed the broom from the back hall.  He swept the floors and was really careful to get around the appliances and dust from the corners.  It surprised him to see so much gunk in the dustpan, but I guess dust falls, even when you’re out of town!

The dusting was Flat Stanley’s favorite chore.  He grabbed the long pole and dusted all the corners and fixtures.

Nana was just about to stop Flat Stanley when he went for the mop, but she held back.  He was really trying to help, so she decided to let him.

That may not have been the best decision.

Flat Stanley grabbed the mop and put the pad on it kinda sideways, but it worked.  He squirted five squirts around the toilet and began working on getting the floors bright and shiny like Nana does.

But the squirts weren’t working very well.

So what do you think Flat Stanley did?

Yes, he went for the dish soap on the counter and squirted that on the floor.  Then he grabbed a bucket and filled it with water.  He didn’t mean to, but his foot slid on the slippery floor and he accidentally bumped into the bucket.  It spilled across the floor making the dishsoap suds up like it does in the sink; but this was all over the floor!

“Ohh no!” Flat Stanley shouted.  This is NOT how he planned to “help” Nana!

Nana heard his shout and forced herself to remain at her desk doing her work.  She pretty much knew what she’d find if she went in there.

Flat Stanley ran up to the linen closet and grabbed towels.  On his hands and knees he cleaned up the water and suds and rang out the towels to the best of his ability.

Papa walked by the hallway, but decided not to go in.  He was really doing what he could to let Flat Stanley be the “big boy” he decided to be yesterday.

Flat Stanley was sopping up the mess for hours.  Everytime he thought he got all of the suds up, he’d feel the sticky tackiness when he walked on it and then get his damp towels down, only to stir up more suds.  It seemed like a never ending cycle.

Eventually, it was clean!  It wasn’t sticky and it shined like Nana’s floors after she mops!  He put the dirty towels in the washing machine and started the wash.

Nana decided not to sit this one out.  She went in and ran the rinse and drain cycle a few times to get the suds off of the towels so they didn’t overflow the washing machine.

She was shaking her head, but as she looked at what a nice job Flat Stanley did on his chores, it showed how he had learned a lesson, or maybe two today.  Nana was smiling.  Flat Stanley was relieved and feeling much better by the days end.  He sighed a big sigh of relief upon seeing Nana’s smile return to her face.

I hope you’re smiling too!  Please subscribe and Nana will send you an email whenever a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.  Thank you for sharing the smiles with your family and friends!

Flat Stanley Gets Hurt

Flat Stanley woke up this morning and wanted to surprise Nana again by gathering the fresh eggs from the coop and feeding the chickens for her before she came downstairs for her coffee.

When he stepped outside, he saw that ice and some snow had covered the yard and walkway.  Between patches of ice, were the stepping stones.  Flat Stanley looked at the path as a challenge, a hopscotch trail challenge!

“Hoppity hoppity, Boop Boop Boop!!!!!”

Jumping down the path he aimed for the dry patches of rocks on the walkway as he chanted, “Hoppity hoppity Boop Boop BOOOoooooooop…, OUCH!” ooohh Flat Stanley didn’t make the last rock of safety and landed on ice instead.

Down he went so fast, he wasn’t able to protect himself very well.  It just all happened so fast.  It hurt bad.  He went in the house and found Nana making her coffee.

“Nanaaahhhh…”

When I looked over I could see Flat Stanley was hurt.  His lip was bright red and there was a scratch on his knee and scuffs on his clothes.

“Oh, come here honey and let’s get some ice on that lip of yours.”  Nana knew he had fallen hard and was worried that his lip was going to swell up like a balloon.

The bag of corn in the freezer will make a great ice pack.

I layed Flat Stanley down on the couch and wiped his teary eyes.  Then I gave him the frozen bag of corn to place on his lip.

“This will hurt a little at first Flat Stanley, but then you’ll begin to get numb and won’t feel the pain.  It will help your lip from swelling too much as well.”

Flat Stanley carefully placed the bag up to his lip looking at Nana, and hoping it wouldn’t hurt too very much.

It did hurt a little when he touched the frozen bag of corn to his lip, but after a while, like Nana promised, it began to get numb and not hurt anymore.

I put the TV on and let Flat Stanley browse through the stations.  When he came across “Mighty Machines,” he was all set. This is a show he likes, but one that won’t make him laugh too much.  It hurt too much to smile.

Flat Stanley had to be careful with what he ate, so he didn’t hurt his lip too much.  He loves applesauce, so I brought him a cup, and he found he could eat that without hurting his now puffy lip.

Flat Stanley has a hard time not smiling, even when it hurts.  He’ll feel better soon with Nana’s care.

I hope your smiles don’t hurt and that you enjoy your day.  Stay safe!  New England is not a fun place to be this “spring.”

This post is dedicated to my granddaughter Alexa.  I heard you fell off your bicycle and hurt your lip.  I hope you’re feeling better and that it doesn’t hurt when you smile now. 😘 Nana and Papa love you.

Flat Stanley Learns Shadow Dancing

Nana went out to feed the chickens this morning and had to wear her heavy coat.  The chickens were squawking like loud hawks, rather than chickens.

“I KNOW,” Nana shouted back, “it IS supposed to be spring!” In Massachusetts, it’s mid April and temperatures are still below freezing at night!

Nana let Flat Stanley throw the chicken’s favorite treats into the coop and thanked him for a wonderful job on cleaning the coop yesterday.  He’s quite the little helper.

Nana’s granddaughter, Briana invited her friend Jianna over for another sleepover.  They came next door to visit with Nana and Flat Stanley.  When Jianna spotted Papa’s drumset, she was itching to play.

“Can I, can I please?” she asked Nana in her sweet little voice with her feet dancing beneath her in a jumping beat.

“Of course you can, just be careful not to topple anything and I’ll bet Flat Stanley would LOVE a lesson!”

“So let the drumming begin!” Flat Stanley shouted. “Booom Batcha Booom Booooom…,” he was hyped!

I don’t know if it was a drumming lesson, but it was FUN!  Jianna loved the sounds that came through her headphones.

“Can you hear us Nana?” She’s shouted, because she couldn’t hear how loud she was speaking with her headphones on.

“NO,” Nana shouted back just as loudly, not sure if she could hear through the headphones she was wearing.

The beats went on .. and on, and on.  Booom BBaba Boooooom tap tap tap, Boooom!!

Flat Stanley then saw the guitar and wanted to join in with a riff to compliment the drumbeat!

“Twank shilang a bang bang…” wonderful music filled the house.  Papa came in singing “Papa was a rollin’ stone…” in his low voice that made everyone laugh.

After the music “lessons,” it was time for some dancing!

“Flat Stanley have you ever danced with your shadow?” Jianna asked him.

“How do you dance with a shadow?” Flat Stanley asked with his little nose crinkled in disbelief.

“Come on I’ll show you!”

And she did!

With the light behind them, Briana, Jianna and Flat Stanley danced with their shadows.

“Everybody Dance Now!!” Flat Stanley sang in his high pitched wail.  They danced and sang together until they were exhausted and hungry!

Nana has a special snack drawer.  You’re only allowed ONE treat a day, but it’s fun to choose.

Brianna and Jianna both selected chips.  What do you think Flat Stanley selected?  Yes!  You know it was the M&M’s!  The sweet taste brings a big smile to his face.

What would you choose?

Flat Stanley and the Chickens

Nana and Papa slept in later than normal this morning.  Flat Stanley got up early and went out to check on the chickens.  They’ve been doing fairly well with all of the big construction trucks and earth moving around their coop.  Flat Stanley wanted to give them some special treats and top off their water, but while doing so, he noticed smells coming from the coop, and they were pretty bad.

When Nana got up, Flat Stanley asked if he could let the chickens run free so that he could clean the coop for her.  Well this was music to Nana’s ears!

“Yes, Flat Stanley, I think the chickens will enjoy roaming free today.” I replied.  I went to bed with music ringing in my ears from a concert and now I wake up to the sweet sound of kindness? Life is good!

The chickens enjoy the special hay that Nana puts in the chicken’s nesting boxes.  It’s softer for them to snuggle in and lay their eggs.  The stuff on the ground level of the coop is more scratchy; but that’s what they do most of the time, scratch the ground looking for bugs and treats.

Today the chickens were roaming free and decided to dig in under a bush for a nice dust bath.  Did you know chicken’s bathe in dirt?  They fluff up their feathers and the dust takes any mites away.  It’s nature’s way…

When Nana came out to check on things, one chicken tried untying her shoelace!  Her name is Cagney, you can tell by her very red mane around her neck area.

After cleaning the coop, Flat Stanley decided to go ROCK CLIMBING!

The rocks are really stacking up from the big crater they’re digging for Nana and Papa’s new house!  Flat Stanley ever so carefully climbed to the VERY top and sang to the chickens running around below him.

“I’m on the top of the world, looking down on creation, and the only explaination, I can find…”

On his walk through the woods behind the house, Flat Stanley found more signs of spring returning to Massachusetts!  When he brought one of these pretty flowers to Nana, she told him they were purple periwinkles, and she winked at him.

He winked back with his two eyed wink, he hasn’t mastered the wink with just one eye thingy, but he tries.

Can you wink with just one eye?

Nana just winked back at you!

I hope Flat Stanley made you smile today!  If so, please subscribe, so Nana can send you an email whenever she posts a new Flat Stanley Adventure.  Today, Nana posted a video of the chickens giving themselves a dustbath.  You may wish to follow Flat Stanley’s Blog on Facebook too.  Keep smiling!

Flat Stanley Joins the Concrete Crew

Flat Stanley could hear the workermen outside, and when he peeked out the window, he saw a few guys lifting heavy boards out of the truck and forming the foundation of Nana and Papa’s new home.

The foreman saw Flat Stanley running towards him.  He was a bit short on his crew today, so the foreman just came out and asked him, “Flat Stanley, you look like an able young man, would you like to join our crew for the day?”

Flat Stanley’s chest puffed up a bit (as much as it could being flat and all), but he stood up straight and tall and said, “Yes, Sir!”

Foreman Frank asked Flat Stanley to work with his own son, to help him move the boards and get them in the big ditch.

He struggled a bit, but he really worked hard with his crewmates.  They placed the boards in framed squares, where the concrete would be poured.

After the boards were layed out in the exact measurements and formation of the future house, it was time for concrete!

“Ohhh boy oh boy!!” Flat Stanley said, as he was asked to help the driver get the truck placed just right so that the concrete would come out of the mighty rolling machine and set to pour into the little frames.  Then he got to FLIP the lever and ggggguuuussssshhhhhh, out came the heavy concrete pouring down the ramp.

Flat Stanley had an idea about the ramp!  It looked like a fun ramp, like a slide!  You know he wanted to, you know he had to; you know he did.

He came down the ramp singing.. “ohhh oohhhh the landslide brought him down…down…”

The concrete crew actually enjoyed Flat Stanley’s silliness and helped him up.  Then they put a trowel in his hand.  That’s the thing they use to smooth out the concrete.

The concrete was then leveled out nice and flat with perfect grooves down the middle.

This is when Flat Stanley got another crazy idea!  He could see the concrete begin to harden, and decided his foot prints would make really pretty tracks in the not yet hard stone.  Then they’d be there forever once they harden!

He begged and he begged Greg.  He was one of the workermen who seemed really nice. “Please, Greg, pleeeeease will you help me leave my footprints in the concrete.” Greg was feeling kind of groovy and actually let Flat Stanley leave his footprints permanently in the foundation of Nana and Papa’s new home!

“Woooo hooooo,” Flat Stanley shouted, “thank you ‘groovy’ Greg!”

After a long days work, Nana came out with her shout, “oohh it’s time for DIIINNNNNNNAAAAHHHHH”

The foreman thanked Flat Stanley for a hard days work. He told him that a check would be arriving and that if he ever needed a job, that his future was as secure as his toolbelt!

Flat Stanley was beaming! Even after a hard days work that left him exhausted, he was smiling.  I hope you’re smiling too.  Oh, there goes Nana again, “OOohhh it’s time for DIIIIIINNNNNnAAAAHHhhhh…” and into the house he ran.

I hope Flat Stanley and the concrete crew brought a smile to your face, as they did mine today.  This one was a lot of fun to put together, the concrete crew was a lot of fun and they LOVED Flat Stanley!  If you subscribe, Nana will send you an email every time a new Flat Stanley Adventure is posted.  I know you can use a daily smile, everyone can these days.

Flat Stanley Goes to Fairy Land

It was a magical morning for Flat Stanley…

He was looking through a small hole, as if in a little bird house.  Looking out, he could see Alexa there!  She had a paintbrush in her hand.  It was a fairly broad wide brush and she was painting the base board brown.  Flat Stanley could hear a lot of people in the room, they were laughing and listening to what sounded like an instructor giving lessons, ideas and direction.

Through the small hole Flat Stanley could see Alexa was very serious about the task at hand.  As she was picking out her seashells and putting them ever so carefully in place, Flat Stanley heard the magic words…Fairy Garden!

“When you create your fairy garden,” the instructor explained, “you’re creating magic. For it is within the fairy garden that fairies feel safe to come out and play.”

Flat Stanley wondered if he had turned into a fairy, because he definitely wanted to come out and play!  So he did!  He squeezed through the little peep hole while she was carefully painting the little bird house with her pink colored paintbrush.

Alexa was very surprised to see Flat Stanley come out of the fairy garden she was creating!  She gave him a big hug and then let him help her place the special charms back on the house.  Because you see, when he popped out, the little butterfly charm at the top of the eve and the little key below his hidaway hole fell off.  So, they fixed it together.

The instructor allowed Alexa and Flat Stanley to use some of her teal paint to create a wading pool for the fairy’s to play in.  She and Flat Stanley created waves with a lighter color.  This was FUN!

Alexa’s sister Jaida and their Mom Shana and grandma Christa were all making their own little fairy gardens.  Flat Stanley had to help Auntie Shana put her cranberry strand back in place after he swung high and wide from the top of her magical fairy garden!

After they were all finished creating their masterpieces, Flat Stanley took a nice picture of all of them, with their magical creations…where fairies reside and hide.

Next thing Flat Stanley knew he was dancing.  Flat Stanley loves to dance!  He was dancing with Alexa!  He started Breakdancing!  The music was loud the beat was thumping through his bones and he was so happy!

…and then Flat Stanley woke up.

IT WAS ALL A DREAM!  A wonderful beautiful magical dream!  Flat Stanley shut his eyes really tight to see if he could return to his magical dream with Alexa…but no.  He was awake, hungry and needed to use the restroom.

Have you ever had a dream that you loved so much, you really hoped that closing your eyes and trying to get back to sleep would return you to the same dream?

Although he couldn’t return to the land of fairies, he was happy to tell Nana all about his magical dream over breakfast.  He made Nana smile.

I hope you’re smiling too!  If you’d like Nana to deliver a smile to your email box every day then please subscribe and let others know about Flat Stanley’s Adventures!  Everyone could use a smile delivered to them daily!
